Unbearable Pains

It was a beautiful rainy day at school. Ndukwe was always happy to come to school because of Ada. They had their greeting code (crossed fingers, a smile and a tight hug). Ndukwe loved to see Ada happy. They kept staring at each other in class. Their love was so beautiful that their classmates started talking.

It was lunch break, and Ndukwe usually went out with Ada. He did not see Ada in the classroom after biology class. Ada's mom was their biology teacher, so Ndukwe concluded in his heart that Ada would be with her mom.

So, he waited for Ada at their spot, the cafeteria, or a beautiful tree beside the school field. He waited all through the lunch break, but Ada did not come. He was sad but chose to control his feelings. As he walked back to the classroom, all his classmates were looking at him. He did not mind because all his life people often looked at him, as he was born different. What made him worried was that Ada was not in the classroom and did not come out for lunch break.

At the end of school, Ndukwe waited for Ada in the parking lot; he was close to Ada's mom's car, waiting for her. Happily, he saw Ada coming towards her mom's car and ran to her, but she was so sad.

"Please go home, Ndukwe," she said.

Ndukwe's heart was so broken.

"Why did you not come to the cafeteria? What is wrong?" he asked.

"Did I do something wrong?" Ada kept saying, "Please go home; I don't want my mom to see you."

That was when he knew that something was wrong but he did not want anything or anyone to take away his newfound love and happiness. Tears started running from Ada's eyes down to his cheek. Ndukwe wished that such a day would never come when he would see Ada crying. They both started crying.

Ndukwe's school bag became so heavy to lift, and his legs could not move anymore. He gently walked away from Ada's mom's car because Ada didn't want her mom to see her talking to him. He sat down in the field, crying, unable to walk back home.

Ada's sorrowful words pierced Ndukwe's heart, breaking it into a thousand pieces. He felt as if the weight of the world had been placed on his shoulders. He took courage to try and walk back home hoping that his nightmare can turn into a beautiful dream. His steps back home grew heavier and heavier. As he made his way back, his thoughts were filled with confusion and pain. How could something so beautiful turn so quickly to sadness? He couldn't hold back the tears, and with each step, his heartache grew, making it difficult for him to keep going.

When Ndukwe finally arrived home, his mother saw him, concern etched into her face. She asked him what was wrong, but Ndukwe was unable to say anything. His tears flowed freely, and he couldn't control his sobs. All he wanted was to be alone, so he went to his room and locked the door.

Ndukwe lay on his bed, consumed by the overwhelming sadness that had engulfed him. He felt as though his world had fallen apart. As the evening drew on, the house filled with the sound of his anguished cries, and he grieved the loss of the beautiful morning that had turned into heartbreak.

Ndukwe's mom could not eat dinner, but persistently kept asking Ndukwe to talk to her. It was around 7:25pm, after so many tears had flowed from his eyes, he decided to talk to his mom because he didn't want her to be sad and unable to eat because of him.

He walked into the living room and saw his mom sitting and sad. He walked to her and told her everything that had happened. His mom comforted him and also told him about her young story with his dad. She said, "It was also difficult with me and your dad, a lot of people, including your dad's family, tried to break us, but love always wins." She begged him to eat and be patient; she said everything will be okay. Ndukwe ate and felt so relieved talking to his mom.

Ndukwe's steps to his room were slow and heavy. He had poured out his fears and worries to his mother and felt a sense of relief, but his mind was still clouded with uncertainty. As he got ready for bed, he was lost in thought, still trying to make sense of everything that had happened.

As he lay down, the sound of the silence enveloped him. His mind replayed the events of the day culminating in the moment he finally expressed himself to his mother. He felt a strange mix of emotions—relief, apprehension, and a glimmer of hope for what the future held as he hoped that tomorrow would be better.

He closed his eyes, and slowly, the serenity of sleep began to take over. Ndukwe's heart held the promise of a new day, a new beginning filled with a sense of optimism. As he drifted into slumber, he held on to the hope that the morning light would bring clarity and peace to his troubled mind, guiding him toward a path of resolve and understanding.

And so, Ndukwe fell asleep, with a silent prayer lingering on his lips, filled with hope for a brighter tomorrow.
