Pulled you back 6 months earlier.
8th January 1442.
There was an overcast of dark clouds above in that evening, indicating that there might be an imminent of rain elsewhere perhaps.
The scouts that had been deployed had not since came back to report of the unusual happenings beyond the rows of dense trees except for some scattered ones where a wagon's width would only be allowed to pass through.
This was to restrict the movement, so any wagons entering through the zones would need to slowly traverse to a crawling pace so that their wheels would not get stuck in the rut.
It was well over three hours when the two scouts that were sent out had returned. It seems that they had scooted around to gather information, stayed within the Shadows and then heads back with the necessary Intel.
It took some time for them to reach the top of the perimeter walls and when they finally did, they stood in front of both Eagle and me to begin reporting their findings.
However, neither the two scouts had spoken any words when they reached and just stood there in front of Eagle as the latter was asking them about what they had uncovered as the two scouts kept mum.
I was surprised at first by their behaviour but never put any thought about it much. Maybe I was there and the two scouts wish to convey the Intel personally so I decided to move away from a few steps.
"Scouts, report the situation. How many people and what kind are they? Are you both alright? It seems you looked kind of dazed or maybe you need to take some warmth later?"
I heard Eagle spoke to them casually as thought that they need to catch their breath and composure after standing there for some moments.
Suddenly...
A flash of highly polished metal glinted on the dimly lit night as a scout suddenly performed a half-crouch and removed his weapon behind his back — a hand sickle with a long handle with a ball of chain attached to it...!
He began to perform a horizontal slash towards Eagle as the former slipped a few steps behind. Without warning, the other scout performed a move sideways and had suddenly arrived at my side. He too had removed his long handle sickle and performed a horizontal slash towards my unprotected waist.
*SWOOSH*
*RRIIIIIIPPPPP*
A section of my thick overcoat was caught in the momentum of the sickle and was torn, missing my sides of the waist by just a mere quarter or even an eighth of an inch. I could feel the wind close by as the sharp blade of the sickle passes by my waist.
I WAS NUMB BY SHOCK...!
"Watch out...!" Eagle shouted as he evaded a flurry of horizontal and mid to low strikes of the long-handled sickle when the first scout suddenly flicked his hand and sent the weapon spinning and flying at an alarming speed towards Eagle's face...!
My side here doesn't look too good as well. As the width of the top walls was 10 feet and was enough for two people to waltz on, but in this case, I was using my thick overcoat as a kind of shield to ward off the attacks of the second scout.
"I'M NOT DOING TOO GOOD HERE..." I shrieked because I was still numb with shock and my movement were rather sluggish. Plus I got nothing on with me to protect myself with.
The blades of the long handle sickle moved too fast for me to do anything but to use the long overcoat, now shredded in my by places, like a matador against a raging bull.
"HELP...." I was shrieking helplessly as the other Shadow units on the watchtowers dare not make a move since an arrow could miss its trajectory and hit either me or their leader accidentally.
It's not that their archery skills were that poor, but those crazed scouts could evade and use their weapons to hit and divert the arrow's trajectory. Shadow units were trained well enough to hit incoming arrows away from them using whatever handheld weapons they have.
Shadow units were, of course, a grandmaster of all weapons...!
That damn sickle coming toward Eagle's face was too fast and it seems that Eagle might lose an eye or even have a face carved out by that blade.
Suddenly the end of the chain was pulled back and the long-handled sickle suddenly flicked and dig deep into Eagle's shoulder before ripping a chunk of flesh from the momentum.
"AAARRRGGGHHH...." I could hear Eagle's wailing as his shoulder was struck and warm fresh blood spewed from the open wound like a geyser, filling the cold chilly evening with the smell of blood. The smell of blood that excites the first scout like a shark that smelled a drop of blood miles away...!
Like a matador, I was literally defending my poor old body from being slashed by the second scout when I threw the shredded thick overcoat in the air and landed on the second scout's head, blinding him momentarily.
I took the darn opportunity to R-U-N...! Not as a coward, but to look for something to fend off the attacks. The archers saw the opportunity as well as shouted "DUCK" and I was so stupid not to need their warning and I thought a duck was actually flying through or something...!!
When the space between me and the second scout had slightly widened, 3 archers let loose their arrows simultaneously, first one missing my cheek and also 2 missing my ear and head as the arrows travelled straight towards the second scout.
To the archers, if a person tried to lay a hand towards a leader, no matter how, it would be considered as an act of treason, no matter if the opposing party was their father, son, sibling or even their close friend...!
The second scout managed to uncover the shredded overcoat on his head and at the same time perform a non-human manoeuvre that knocked away the incoming three arrows.
Soon, the second scout was on my heels again and he tripped my heels and sent me sprawling face-first on the cold, hard rock surface. I got scrapped knees, elbows as my chin slammed hard on the surface, dizzying me.
The archers were ready to let loose another set of arrows when Eagle shouted them to stop as he somehow flitted across and managed to give a hard kick on the second scout that sent him tumbling forward and landed next to me as well.
"HOYY... ARE YOU FEEDING ME TO THE SHARK OR WHAT...?!" I wanted to scream out but instinct took over as I was used to watching the wrestling match and prayed that whatever those half-naked men were doing on the ring would not be just for show.
The second scout they had tumbled was close to me and his hand that was holding to the deadly weapon was close to my side as well. I knew I can't wrestle the weapon away from his grip but then I just had to copy the move.
Let me do it this time, Lord, to save my own skin...!
I did a backspin, slammed my left foot on the side of the second scout's head, while my right foot was slammed tight against near his armpit. In this way, not only I had restricted his head movement, but also thought I could stop him from even hurting me. His left arm was within reach and I grabbed it, twisted his wrist in order to disarm him and pulled hard.
Feetnpuahijgnagaijstbhead and body, arm pulling against me. Two opposite forces and the second scout was trying to roll over but I arched my back and pulled the arm further until I heard...
*SSNNAAPP*
The scout's left arm had been dislocated out from the shoulders but still, I held on as my arched back had touched the ground and hurrying feet were heard as the archers ran towards me.
When Eagle had kicked the second scout and I had successfully manhandled him and made him dislocate his poor arm, Eagle had his back turned and this was an opportunity for the first scout he was against with earlier.
*SWOOSH*
*CLANG*
Eagle's back was hit by the long handle sickle at close quarters but it was fortunately stopped by two pieces of weapons that had a blunted, prong shaped metal baton, with two curved prongs projecting from the handle.
There were no injuries sustained and Eagle turned about and unsheathed his metal batons. He twirled it about in front of the scout and knew that the weapons may not cause any serious injuries and may be used to counter it.
With a flick of the hand, the metal baton was swirling in the hand as a strike and as a defence mechanism as both began to duel on top of the walls.
The archers by then had carried away after securing with a pair of dungeon shackles and were brought down to the Barracks down below for Interrogation. I was ushered away to the watchtower where a blanket was being used to cover me up.
From my view, I could see Eagle was having an upper hand despite the long-handled sickle had a greater advantage as I saw Eagle perform lamb chops and chicken chops on the sides of the knees to bring the scout down and to disarm the weapon the latter was wielding.
Before long the scout was subdued and was shackled and brought to the Barracks below, awaiting for further instructions.
Immediately a medical person came from below and attended to Eagle that had a good chunk of his shoulder shredded off from the single strike of the sickle.
Author's Note:
The long handle sickle was called a kurisagama while Eagle's weapons were called a sai. There was a movie that started Jason Statham where he played as a Farmer and there was a group of Shadow units aka Ninjas involved in the movie.
