Later, after Kevin had dozed off leaning against a tree and Dayna and Jon-Allen sat in shadow several feet away whispering, Matt walked over to Ash, who was busying herself by rearranging her bag.
“I told Jon-Allen not to do it,” he said.
“Do what?” she asked, wadding her clothes into a corner.
“I don’t even know why he wants a girlfriend. For one thing, that’s stupid. For another, it’s kind of a bad time. We should be thinking about not getting caught instead of…whatever he’s thinking of. I mean, that’s why you’re upset, right?”
She smiled. “Yeah, that’s it.”
“If they break up or get in a fight it won’t be good.”
“True.” Ash felt a pang in her chest. Jon-Allen had better not hurt Dayna. “Has he had lots of girlfriends?”
“Yeah, he’s usually got a girlfriend. It’s crazy,” Matt said.
