Three figures appeared beside the main structure of the trial tower, looming in the void, their presence towering and resolute. Simply standing there made them seem unshakeable, as if they were part of the fabric of the sky itself.
"I never thought those abyssal fiends would dare to strike," one of them muttered, his tone laced with disdain.
"They're always creeping in the shadows," another replied, his voice grim. "What's our move now?"
One figure reached out, connecting with the trial tower to assess the situation inside.
"The filth from the abyss has breached the tower," he reported. "Their target is the candidates in the battle space. The spatial rules have been corrupted, and abyssal energy is interfering with the system."
The third figure's face darkened. "How long to stabilize it?"
"One hour."
Inside the tower, in the heart of the battle space, the candidates were locked in fierce combat, slaying waves of monsters. Then, without warning, all the creatures vanished.
The entire realm shifted. The air thickened with a stifling pressure, and from the ground, black mist began to seep.
"What's going on?" someone exclaimed.
"Why did the monsters disappear?"
Lin Moyu, ever cautious, immediately regrouped his skeleton warriors, encircling himself for protection. In unknown situations, survival was paramount.
"Lin!" a familiar voice called out. Lin Moyu turned to see Xia Xue approaching, a look of bewilderment on her face. She too seemed surprised to see him in the same space.
"Do you know what's happening?" she asked, glancing around nervously.
Lin Moyu shook his head in silence. He had no answers.
"I was in the middle of fighting monsters," Xia Xue continued, "and suddenly they all vanished. This... it feels wrong."
Despite the unsettling atmosphere, being near Lin Moyu seemed to calm her. His stoic demeanor was infectious, and her initial panic began to subside.
Suddenly, flashes of light illuminated the darkened battle space. One by one, other candidates began appearing, over a hundred of them in total. Along with the five from Jiangning Province, participants from all over the empire materialized.
Then, a powerful voice echoed across the space.
"Children."
The voice was commanding, but familiar. "I am Bai Yiyuan."
A collective gasp swept through the candidates.
"Bai Yiyuan... it's the White God!" one exclaimed in awe.
Hearing the voice of Bai Yiyuan, one of the most revered figures in the Shenxia Empire, sent waves of shock and admiration through the group. His presence was legendary, and his words immediately drew the full attention of every candidate.
Bai Yiyuan's voice reverberated across the space, not just to the candidates, but throughout all the examination rooms in the empire.
"The demons from the abyss have infiltrated the battle space," Bai Yiyuan declared, his tone unwavering. "We are working to restore the tower's spatial rules, but it will take about an hour. During that time, the demons will be targeting you."
He paused, letting the gravity of the situation sink in before continuing, "We do not know what methods they will use, but I trust that if you stand united, you will be able to hold your ground. Remember, you are people of Shenxia, and we do not fear battle. Nor do we fear death."
His words carried a powerful weight, stirring something deep within the candidates. The silence that followed was soon broken by a rising chant.
"Don't fear battle, don't fear death!"
The chant grew louder, echoing through the space as the candidates, fueled by youthful determination, rallied themselves. Xia Xue, swept up in the moment, nearly joined in, but when she glanced at Lin Moyu, still calm and composed, she hesitated and lowered her hand. His quiet strength was reassuring.
Though Lin Moyu didn't chant along, his resolve was no less firm. At just eighteen years old, he too was from Shenxia. The fire in his eyes was unmistakable. He may not shout, but he would face the abyssal demons with no hesitation.
Outside the battle space, tensions were high. Ning Xuanfeng, one of the overseers, watched the events unfold with a steely gaze.
"This is no small incident," he said quietly, his voice measured despite the urgency of the situation. "For the abyss to strike now, during the grand exam..."
His thoughts aligned with the others in the room. "They're after our brightest. If we don't handle this carefully, this could become an annual assault."
The abyss was indeed cunning. The candidates in the trial tower represented the future of Shenxia, its next generation of warriors, scholars, and leaders. Targeting them during such a crucial event was a sinister ploy to weaken the empire from its roots.
Ning Xuanfeng's voice cut through the murmur of the examiners. "Silence!" His command was sharp, and all talk ceased instantly. He looked around, his gaze like a blade. "Spread the word outside. There is no need to panic. Trust in Bai Yiyuan."
The examiners bowed their heads in deference. "We trust the White God."
In the city of Xiajing, and throughout the empire, the public's anxieties began to settle. There was an unshakable faith in Bai Yiyuan's abilities, and that trust rippled through the crowds as they prayed for the safety of the candidates.
Back in the battle space, the atmosphere grew ever more oppressive. A crimson blood moon had appeared in the sky, casting an eerie red glow across the land.
"It's the Abyss Blood Moon!" someone shouted.
The power of the abyss was taking hold.
"Everyone, prepare yourselves!"
