Chapter 47

"I'm not even sure that I can." Cameron sighed as he approached Marcus.

"You did it before," Megan replied.

"But that was a reflex. I can stem the bleeding for now, but anything else could be dangerous." Cameron stated.

Cameron carefully placed two fingers across the wound freezing the outer layer delicately. While repeating the process on the other side his comrades made preparations. It didn't take long for a dark van to roll up.

Megan retrieved her bag from the bikers and seized a pistol in case they had second thoughts. Jordan went off to gather their things, and load them into their new ride. During this process Cameron noticed the bikers glaring in his direction, but not at him.

"If bikers are about brotherhood then why shoot him?" Cameron investigated.

"He's a fucking rat."

"Not just any rat either, but a fed. Given the money in her bag, and rush to get on the road I assume that's a problem." Trevor stated.

Megan overheard and approached Cameron to ensure he didn't do anything rash. Cameron just helped save his life but was now staring Marcus down. She knew why it was bad, but tried to think of an argument to convince him.

"Is that true?" Cameron inquired.

'There's no point in resisting, and lying won't do me any good.'

"DEA to be exact. You rob a bank or something?" Marcus leaned against a car for support.

"All he did was protect me, but now they wanna capture him," Megan told Marcus.

Jordan was pulling up in the new ride, and overhead Megan explaining their situation. While doing this a familiar nip returned to the air. The bikers huddled together as Trevor smirked.

'Without their star witness we can always relocate, and rebuild.'

"Can't we just tie him up?" Megan pleaded.

The ground rapidly froze around Cameron as Marcus flinched. A crude cage made from ice rapidly appeared around the bikers. Gradually the ground thawed as Cameron stared down Trevor.

"I wouldn't touch the bars unless you wanna end up like your friend there." Cameron nodded at Victor.

"Thank you." Megan smiled.

"I'm not always a fan of cops, but that's only the ones with ulterior motives." Cameron turned towards Marcus.

"The phones are down, and the closest landline is about a half hour's walk, but if you wait long enough it will come back up on its own. In the meantime, I suggest you secure a weapon, and some bandages because I'll melt the ice in an hour." Cameron warned Marcus before entering the van.

"Shouldn't you cage him up to?" Jordan asked.

"He lost enough blood to slow him down." Cameron motioned Megan to hurry up.

"It would be bad if he passed out inside." Jordan adjusted his mirrors.

"Thank you," Marcus told Megan.

"I promise we aren't the bad guys." Megan looked back before sliding the door closed.

Once Megan was in they got back on the road and continued up the backroads. Their destination was the grand canyon, and if no more road bumps occurred it could be reached by nightfall. Besides the lecturing from Megan, the ride was rather quiet.

'He's been acting weird.' Megan glanced at Jordan.

"How long will it last this time?" Megan asked.

"Not sure, but so long as I keep calm it's not that bad," Cameron replied.

'The radio would be nice though.'

Speeding down a highway in Arizona was an RV with troopers on its tail. Jacob had no regrets about his deception, but he couldn't help but ponder the consequences. He couldn't dwell on it any longer for a roadblock was coming into view.

'Don't wanna hit strips at full speed.'

Jacob slammed on the brakes as the RV swerved from side to side. Being a top-heavy vehicle it nearly toppled over, but it fell back on four wheels. Jacob got up from the front seat and dashed to the bedroom.

"You're surrounded!"

Jacob barricaded the door and thought of some excuses that could work. Among all the cop cars was a black impala with a light on the dashboard. Mika took readings from the RV, but could only detect one lifeform.

"We've been duped." Mika relayed.

"Pay up," Garrett told the driver.

"Just take it." The driver reluctantly tossed his KitKat.

"We had contingencies in place either way, and he could still provide intel. How's the radar?" Murphy asked his technician.

"They're not even trying to cloak right now, but we still can't reach them."

"Should we test that?" Garrett smirked at Murphy.

Murphy shot a glare at Garrett that caused him to drop it. It was rare for him to get upset, but everyone in the Syndicate knew better than to push Murphy's patience. The van caught up to the scene as they exited, and displayed their badges.

"Why risk a felony for a stranger?" Mika investigated.

"You wouldn't understand." Jacob turned away.

"Try us." Murphy stated.

"Just take me in," Jacob demanded.

"What happens to your children in that scenario?" Murphy asked.

"You have no right to talk about them!" Jacob retorted.

"That wasn't a threat. Do you wanna see them again?" Murphy asked sincerely.

"Of course." Jacob replied.

"Then answer her questions, and i'll make sure you're back home tomorrow. Someone in your condition shouldn't be on the road, or behind bars for that matter." Murphy stated.

"He helped my family," Jacob told Mika.

"Why would he do that?" Mika investigated.

"I'm still not sure about that. What I do know is he saved my life." Jacob replied.

"Seems to me he put your life at risk." Garrett stated.

"He helped me then disappeared without asking for anything in return. I did this of my own free will." Jacob declared.

"How did he save your life?" Murphy inquired.

"I know this is hard to beleive, but it's gone." Jacob took a deep breath.

"We'll take it from here," Murphy announced.

"He needs to be processed." A cop stated.

"I'll handle that." Murphy offered.

"This is a breach in protocol, and we've spent the last twenty-four hours chasing him. You aren't taking him anywhere." An FBI agent argued.

"If you wanna keep your job, and your life you should play along." Garrett casually mumbled while shaking his hand.

The agent reached for a gun, but his partner shook her head discouraging him. He's been in the field for ten years, and it wasn't a luxurious life. Chasing fugitives, and deadly shootouts was a normal day for them. Even with the risks, and stress from the job it was the first time he saw his superior afraid.

"Thank you for all your help." Garrett smiled politely.

'What kind of agents are they?'
