My Skeleton System

James was the worst of the worst when it came to living as a human. Living most of his life as a bandit, he finally reaped that karma and it was most assuredly poor karma.

I am so dead

The day started off like any other for James. Pulling up his pants and shuffling out of the latest brothel. Making his way back to the camp that was the latest move his boss had made to avoid the law. He was almost to his bosses tent when he realized how quiet it was. A deathly quiet that made all of hair on his body stand on end.

Before he could even make a move, it was already too late. An arrow bored through his back and ended up sticking out his chest. The force of the arrow made him take a few staggering steps forward before he collapsed to his knees. The only thing he could do was stare down at the arrow in disbelief before it was unceremoniously ripped out of him.

James ended up laying face down in the mud as his life blood poured out of him into the ground below. It was then that he could see into the tent next to his to see some of his comrades with their throats cut. The last thought he had was, 'Yep... I am so dead.' Before the lights when out behind his eyes.

James felt cold and weightless as he drifted through a dark expanse. He knew he was dead as dead could be and was resigned to float through this endless expanse for all eternity as punishment for his deeds. That was when he saw the light gradually approaching him from the distance.

"James, you spent you life as scum of the earth and it is time to reap what you have sowed." Said the figure that approached him.

The figure was beautiful beyond belief, appearing to be neither man nor woman. It wore a grey robe that hung loosely from its form and carried a lantern lit with a cool blue flame. James had seen depictions of this deity before. This was the personification of the cycle of reincarnation, and the god of endless change, Plyos.

"For your crimes against humanity, you shall be sent back as the lowest of the low. To struggle and fight to survive. The worst yet will to be never know the taste of death again." Plyos said

The whole exchange seemed to take less than a minute yet an eternity at the same time. Plyos' face never once changed during the whole exchange. The voice was neutral and plain without malice, everything said was matter of fact. With a wave of the lantern, Plyos had bathed James in the purifying flames, reducing him to a mere soul to be sent back into the cycle.

The next thing that James heard was the most dreadful thing that he could think of hearing.
