The chance of a hijacker hiding among women, children, and older men was slim. If there was a hijacker among them, he would be among the young men. Dividing the group was a good way to manage and monitor the crowd of people.

If there was a hijacker among the young men, there's a risk, but at least they minimized the risk. A young man who was a hijacker would be a lot more dangerous than an older man, a woman, or a child who was a hijacker.
