There was a pause and then one of the guys who was standing there raised an eyebrow, looking over at the sparkling red color coming from the dark corner, "Yiwei, who is that?"
Xia Yiwei looked towards the direction he was looking, and her expression immediately darkened when she saw the familiar red color.
Xu Anyi looked the best in red, because the bold red color complimented her proud personality and glamorous appearance, and especially tonight, she looked too good to be true.
The man who had asked the question also got lost in the beautiful sight.
A lonely woman standing in the dark, drinking a glass of red wine by herself. The sparkling red color stood out in the darkness and she seemed to sparkle herself, blinding his eyes.
Just the beautiful sight was enough to get him intoxicated, and he took a step forward, but stopped himself, deciding to wait for Xia Yiwei's response first.
Xia Yiwei turned around, her expression back to normal, "Oh, that's Xu Anyi."
The man frowned, "Xu Anyi. . . Why does that name sound so familiar? Is she part of our circle?"
Xia Yiwei smiled, "No- Well, not anymore."
Her response made the man more confused, and it took a moment before another person standing to the side pointed out, "Xu Anyi. . . Isn't that the name of the daughter of the Xu family? The one that suddenly disappeared five years ago?"
Xia Yiwei smiled and did not say anything.
"Oh!" The man exclaimed, and his mouth fell open in shock, "That's Xu Anyi?! I've heard of her before. . . the red rose of the city, right? My friends talked about her before once."
The man was the son of a newly rich family, as his father's company suddenly grew overnight about three years ago. Therefore, he was only able to join the upper class recently, which was why he never got the chance to see Xu Anyi, and only knew about her from his other friends talking about her name.
He smiled brightly, "I've always wanted to see her for myself. . . She is indeed very beautiful."
His eyes brightened as he nodded his head slightly. To the side, one of his friends pushed him, causing him to almost fall into the swimming pool to the side, "Yu Hao, stop staring at her so openly, you look like a hungry wolf. If you have the guts, go speak to her."
"Of course I do!" The man named Yu Hao straightened his suit, but as he took a step forward, he stopped and furrowed his eyebrows together, then returned to his original position.
She looked beautiful, yet also distant and unapproachable. Something about her made it seem like nothing could reach her, and nothing could affect her.
Although he had always been a confident and brave person, Yu Hao could not bring himself to walk up to her. He knew that he would just be asking for failure.
Perhaps it was also because his friends have told him about her pride and critical attitude towards men, which is why he lost his confidence in front of the renowned red rose of the city.
Yes, a rose could only be admired from a distance.
If you got too close, you were certain to get hurt.
"What? Scared?" His friend continued to tease him, and he glared at his friend, crossing his arms together, "If you dare, you go!"
His friend raised an eyebrow and turned around, grabbing a glass of wine before walking over to the corner of the pool with large strides.
Everyone in the group began whistling as they turned to watch the drama.
Xia Yiwei's hand clenched on tightly against her glass as she pressed her lips together, trying to hide her sour expression.
She always knew that Xu Anyi was prettier than her. In fact, Xu Anyi was prettier than all the girls in the upper class circle, even almost all of the celebrities in the country, which was why she was regarded as the pearl of the Xu family, the red rose of the city.
That was also why she had always been jealous of her. It was unfair?! Why did she get everything? A good family, good looks, and everyone always revolved around her!
Xia Yiwei's hand began shaking slightly as the palm of her hand turned red from the pressure she was applying to the glass, which threatened to break.
When she saw Xu Anyi tonight, her heart had almost stopped. It wasn't because she was surprised at Xu Anyi's beauty or surprised that she came, but it was because the sight of her tonight made Xia Yiwei almost believe that the old Xu Anyi was back.
The thought made her so fearful that her back began to sweat even though it was chilly up on the balcony.
Xia Yiwei narrowed her eyes.
No, she had to do something about it. It was her birthday tonight. She could not let Xu Anyi ruin it!
—
Xu Anyi stood in the corner, feeling the wind against her face.
In the past, she had never liked parties like this, and now, she found it to be even more boring than she had remembered.
However, she knew that her job here was halfway done already.
Although others may not notice, she could tell that Xia Yiwei was uncomfortable and unhappy that all the attention had been drawn away from her.
Seeing Xia Yiwei unhappy made her feel unbelievably pleasant and happy!
Xu Anyi smiled softly as she took another sip of the wine, and she suddenly felt a tap on the back of her shoulder.
She was leaning against the glass railing and looking down at the tiny street several floors below her, so she did not realize that a man had walked up to her until she turned around.
"Hi!" The man waved, resting one arm against the glass railing.
She slowly raised an eyebrow.
"I'm Xu Wei, we have the same surname!" He smiled, showing a straight array of bright white teeth, "Nice to meet you!"
He held his hand out and Xu Anyi looked at the hand, but did not shake it. Instead, she continued to raise an eyebrow, tilting her head to the side slightly.
She was more than familiar with this type of man.
And they were one of the many reasons why she did not like parties like this. People like him would come up one after another to try and strike up a conversation with her, and in the beginning, she used to pretend to show some interest in keeping up the conversation, but after a few parties, she grew tired and stopped bothering with men like him.
They all only came to talk to her because of her appearance, and that idea alone already made her uncomfortable.
The man blinked a few times and laughed it off himself, pulling his hand back. He could hear the group of people behind him laughing and he straightened his back, determined to take down this woman.
So what if she was Xu Anyi?
He had heard some things about what had happened to the Xu family five years ago. She was no longer the pearl of the Xu family, and he had confidence that he was on the same level as her! She should feel glad to have the opportunity to talk to him.
*helemon's note: Um. . . I think you might have some misunderstandings, Mr. Xu. No one but our Mumu is able to match our Anyi ^o^
"Why are you standing here alone? If you want to, we can go get a drink together?"
"Not interested," Xu Anyi said simply, finishing the rest of the wine in her glass in one gulp. She then turned around to walk away, and seeing this, Xu Wei quickly grabbed onto her arm.
"Wait, Ms. Xu-" He called, trying to keep a patient face as he smiled, "I don't think you know who I am yet."
He smiled and straightened his suit, "I am Xu Wei, the son of the owner of the XX Company."
A hint of arrogance appeared on his face as he tilted his head slightly, "And I'm interested in you. So, do you want to go out with me?"
". . ." Xu Anyi's eyes narrowed slightly.
