The Lucky Woman

Nidia recorded around twenty videos of her son with her phone.

It was a rare opportunity for her to see him, so she had to record loads of videos any time she could.

Grandma had gone out with a few of her friends from square dancing today. It was another boring Saturday at home for Nidia.

She went to Lily's house in the morning and made breakfast for two.

Lily immediately brushed her teeth and rushed to the dining table. She held the bowls of porridge in her hands and said, "Awhhh, I can finally taste our darling Nidia's homemade porridge!"

"I'll cook for you more then." Nidia said, bringing out a few side dishes she had just made.

It was a light and nutritious breakfast, and it tasted delicious as well.

The two then chatted a little as they ate breakfast together.

Nidia liked watching videos of her son every day. She pulled out her phone and pressed on one of the videos. The video was taken when the little guy was asleep on the big bed.

His chubby little hands were placed on his mouth, and he looked absolutely adorable with his pink puffed up cheeks.

Lily scooched over as well. She wanted to watch her godson sleeping too. In the video, her godson suddenly smiled gently during his sleep, as if he was having a really sweet dream.

Nidia relied on these videos to help her recharge mentally every single day.

Time really flies. She hadn't seen Bubsy for more than half a month.

Lily was holding on to her spoon, not taking a bite, deep in thought. She turned to Nidia and asked, "That bed my godson was sleeping on seems quite expensive.

Same goes with the bathroom in that video of him bathing you sent me. With that big of a bathroom, isn't the dad quite rich?"

Upon hearing what Lily said, Nidia looked up and their gazes met.

Lily couldn't help be curious, and continued, "So, I kind of want to know who the dad is. But if you don't want to tell me, that's fine too."

Nidia went silent for a few seconds, and then murmured, "Jackson Cunningham."

Lily fell speechless.

'Jackson what now?' Nidia noticed that Lily's eyebrows were furrowed, confusion plastered on her face.

Nidia then repeated, "Jackson Cunningham."

Lily paused.

Jackson! Cunningham!

"His parents must be psychics, what a name. How old is the guy? Does he know he has the same name as the cruel and cold blooded business tycoon?" Lily said, giving Nidia a nudge.

'Simply extraordinary!' Lily scooped up another spoon of porridge. She was impressed by her godson's grandparents.

After taking another mouthful of porridge, Lily then joked as per usual, "There seems to be a lot of Cunninghams in Baile City huh? Lucky you, you met someone with the exact same name."

"I thought Cunningham was a rare surname!" Lily added.

Nidia stopped eating the bowl of porridge in front of her. She put down her spoon and smiled sadly to her friend, "No, he doesn't have the exact same name. He is in fact the Jackson Cunningham that we all know."

Lily was shocked. Her mouth widened, but no words came out. Her spoon fell to the ground as well.

In Lily's eyes, Nidia was a shy and sweet girl. She can be quite stubborn sometimes, and became fairly strong headed after nearly two years of abuse from her family.

However, Nidia was not one to joke about something like this!

Lily then came back to her senses and stared at Nidia, who seemed really upset.

'So it was true!' Gulping nervously, Lily said in disbelief, "So you're saying, when you secretly sold your body back then, the person you ended up with was Cunningha..." Nidia was expressionless. All she did was nod in agreement.

Shocked, Lily's mouth was wide open once more, so much that her mouth could fit an entire lightbulb.

Nidia decided to ignore Lily for now. She wanted to send a text to Dylan.

She missed her child very much. It had been more than half a month, after all.

In just a few minutes, Dylan texted back.

[I'm deeply sorry, Miss South. Madame has gone overseas to visit their relatives.

Someone in the family will be celebrating their 80th birthday soon. The relative wanted to meet the young master, but he's too old to travel too much. So madame had brought the young master along with her.]

...

Nidia read Dylan's text over and over again.

Phone in hand, she collected her thoughts and texted once more.

[I'd like to ask, do you know when they'd be coming back?] After a brief moment, Dylan replied.

[I'm not quite sure, Miss South. Perhaps I could inform you as soon as they come back?] What else can she say after reading his reply?

[Okay, thanks.] After that, Nidia placed her phone on the dining table and spaced out. The text Dylan sent lingered in her head.

'Bubsy is just two months old, and he's already travelling overseas with his grandmother to attend a celebration?' Lily, on the other hand, had finally accepted the fact that Jackson Cunningham was her godson's father. However, she still seemed slightly shaken up.

Although she was still visibly shocked, Lily noticed Nidia seemed down and asked in a slightly monotonous tone, "What's wrong?"

Nidia lifted her gaze and looked at Lily, still deep in thought, "I haven't seen my baby for more than half a month. I originally wanted to see him during the weekend, but they said his grandmother brought him overseas to attend the 80th birthday celebration of one of their relatives."

"Then just wait till they come back. Big families, am I right? They have lots of seniors, all of them live long, too. They have amazing lives!" Lily said, matter-of-factly.

Nidia shook her head and contemplated, "I asked when they'd be back, but they told me they weren't sure?"

Lily quietly listened.

Nidia sighed. "I'm not sure if I'm too sensitive or something, but this just doesn't feel quite right! I felt a sudden rush of anxiety for the past two days, too!"

Just then, Lily remembered something. She said, "Hey Nid, I don't want you to overthink, but I just remembered something."

"What?" Nidia felt as if this was connected as to why she wasn't able to see her child.

Lily put down her spoon. "Two years ago, when I was still working in GF, one of our department heads was demoted. It was due to personal matters, because she wasn't able to work at all. Do you know what happened to her?"

Nidia asked, "What happened?"

"Well, we work in the PR department, right? All of our female colleagues were fairly good looking. The department head was both beautiful and capable, and was chased after by a rich guy. They started dating but had an 'accident', and she got pregnant and gave birth to his child. The rich guy promised to marry her, but even after the child was born, that promise was never fulfilled."

"It was a baby boy. The rich guy's family refused to let them see each other, too.

They were worried that the child would be too close to his mother when he's more mature."

Nidia's heart dropped to her stomach. She didn't know what to say.

Bubsy would start to recognize the people around him too. He would grow closer and closer to his caretakers and people who treat him well.

Could it be that the Cunnighams were worried that he'd grow close to her, his biological mother? So, they decided to make up a lie and said that the child wasn't in Baile City?

Just so they could prevent them from seeing each other?

Nidia snapped back to reality and turned to Lily. "What happened next?"

"That went on for a year or so. Our department head still couldn't see her child. After the child turned a year old, their family sent him overseas. If the child were to settle down there in the future, he probably wouldn't come back even if he turned into an adult."

Nidia could feel her head hurting.

The Cunninghams were both rich and powerful. They really might end up hiding the child from her, wiping her existence out of his life...

She then spent the rest of the weekend in an absent minded state.

On Monday, Nidia gathered up all the energy she could to go to work.

In comparison to her moodiness, the atmosphere in the office was extremely lively this morning.

Usually, the office would be dull during the morning. All of them were still young.

Some of them would watch dramas, while others would go out and drink. They would spend all their energy the whole night.

All of them would feel cranky for not getting enough sleep the next morning.

During the afternoon, everyone would order beverages like milk tea or coffee. After a few cups, they'd be able to regain strength to keep working. However, everyone seemed abnormally energized today.

"Oh my god! Who's the lucky girl?"

"Lord... Look at how Mr. Cunningham is holding his child. He looks so loving after becoming a father!"

...

"I'm so jealous. Who's the mother? Who is it?"

"Who would've thought the infamous cold-blooded business tycoon would be so loving and gentle towards his son!"

Nidia walked into the office, sitting down at her work desk without saying a word.

One of the colleagues standing at the side was holding a weekly magazine. She was fangirling to the colleague next to her, "Look at this picture! Is Mr. Cunningham smiling? From his side profile, the corner of his mouth seemed to be curving up. He's smiling, right?"

"Okay, okay, let's get back to work. Dreamboats like him are like a myth to us. We can't possibly meet them. All we can do is admire them from afar. We can try dreaming about 'hanging out' with him... hehe!"

"I'll press his photo against my chest. That means he's marked my chest now, hmph!"

The female colleague smirked as she hugged the magazine tightly. She then realized Nidia had come to work.

"Hey Nidia, let me show you some good stuff. Don't get jealous, though!" The female colleague took the magazine off her chest and showed it to Nidia excitedly.

Nidia listened quietly to her and looked at the photo in the magazine.

Jackson Cunningham was wearing a black coat with a white dress shirt. He was wearing shades as well, his cold and unapproachable aura radiating as he walked out of his Rolls-Royce Ghost.

This cold hearted man was holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket in his arms.

Nidia looked attentively at the date on the magazine, which showed that this was when Bubsy was one months old.

This photo appeared to be taken 20 days ago. Jackson was bringing Bubsy to his month-old celebration.

"Cool." Nidia said as she handed the magazine back.

"Huh?"

The female colleague was shocked. "Nidia, do you not feel anything? Are you asexual?"

Nidia switched on her computer and shot a confused look. "What should I be feeling?"

"Jealousy? Frustration?"

"Nope..." Nidia replied truthfully.

The female colleague gently knocked on Nidia's head.

"Nidia darling, you're 25. You don't have a boyfriend, and you don't even feel anything towards men like Mr. Cunningham? Are you're a lesbian?"

"Wait, that's not right, you had a child. Dang, I've never seen any woman have such a cold attitude towards men. I'm guessing that your child is a secret love child!"

Nidia started working.

Upon hearing what the female colleague had to say, she turned her head and replied dismissively, "You got that right..." The female colleague's expression was filled with shock. "What? It's true?"

Nidia wasn't afraid to admit it, so she nodded once more.

The colleague's eyes widened. She had admired Nidia, who was working. She did not expect the conservative Nidia would dare to bear a secret love child.

After work, Nidia and Lily decided to have a shopping session. Lily dragged Nidia into a lingerie shop.

"Nidia, don't worry about it so much. Maybe his grandma really brought him to the celebration?" Lily said, picking out a few sets of lingerie.

She picked out a really sexy bra and placed it in front of Nidia's chest.

"Stop..." Nidia said, pushing Lily's hand away. The style of the bra was too bold for her.

Before shopping, Nidia had asked Lily to follow her to Azalea street. The Cunninghams' mansion was there.

They then waited at the opposite side of the street for more than an hour. No cars had exited from the mansion.

The mansion was at the far back, and they couldn't see anything from the gates.

The two of them were suspiciously peeping into the gates from the opposite of the street, which soon caught the attention of the security guards. They then left out of fear.

Nidia didn't know what Jackson's ancestors had accomplished. That mansion was terrifyingly large, and even their address seemed more extravagant than others.

Nidia had met the rich, but she had never seen people as extravagant as the Cunninghams.
