A new friend.

All of Lexi's 'made-up' words are in italics. Ok, enjoy!

The class had another twenty minutes to end.

The teacher already started on the syllabus, which is really not what I would want to do on the first day. The other students started laughing and chatting, but I kept silent. I can't afford another 'offense' or I might be sent out, which is also something I would not want to do on the very first day.

'It's not my fault if I have insomnia and continuous re-occurring nightmares, it's not like I do it on purpose or anything.' I mumbled under my breath.

Nightmares.

The disturbing or unpleasant dream awakens you with sweat on your forehead and kicking the bedsheets. They aren't traumatic, but I lose control over there. It's like, someone is controlling me without my will, manipulating me, and slowly turning me into their puppet. I don't remember anything in detail, just vague memories that erase themselves over the course of time. That's just infuriating.

I used to scream and kick the bedsheets off the bed. It woke the whole neighborhood up. My parents first brushed it off as nothing, but after continuous repetitions, they had no other option than to send me to a therapist.

She was nice, but it just made my nightmares worst. Something always felt wrong. As if someone was always watching me.

After that, I would stay awake as possible to avoid going to sleep. To avoid getting ordered and shoved to the ground. To avoid being under the ground.

'Psst!' I heard a whisper.

I turned around and aside. It was the same girl.

She slid a paper under my desk.

I opened it and found her note in very beautiful handwriting.

Thanks for complimenting my eyes.

I glanced her way to see her smiling. Her eyes were more visible here.

I threw it back at her.

Sorry for being weird, I read an article about people with green eyes, and they said that green-eyed people tend to be more creative(and a little devious hehe) than an average person. What do you like to do in your free time?

She looked at me with an eyebrow raised and scribbled something.

I like to birdwatch.

My eyes lit up upon hearing this. Me too!

'I have a big bird encyclopedia.' I whispered.

She grinned wide on hearing that.

'Me too!'

'I'll bring it to school sometime.' I whispered.

She hesitated for a moment, and then she smiled and nodded simultaneously.

'Ok.'

-------------------------------

It was lunch and I couldn't be more happier.

I had money with me, and I was starving because that piece of bread wasn't absoultely enough.

And I had a friend to eat lunch with.

I hated making friends, they usually think I'm weird to talk with or vice versa.

But birds? Come on, I can't say no to that.

Me and dad sometimes go stay in our family vacation house and birdwatch for the whole weekend. It calms my nerves and gives me a sense of satisfaction and peacefulness in my life.

Rare birds are my favorite, they flew miles just to get away from the cold or the heat.

They're not the only ones who want to escape from trouble.

And their ability to fly, the freedom it gives. Whenever I think of a bird soaring up high in the sky, I wished to be a bird. Wild and free.

'What is your favorite bird?' I asked while we had lunch.

'Ummm...I guess pigeons.' she replied bluntly.

'Oh.'

'What?'

'Well, I thought it would be like a hummingbird, or a sunbird.' I gulped down the panini.

'I know, but pigeons are super derpy, if you look at it closely, they're pretty and smart too. And in the city you see lots of different color morphs, like brown pigeons and red pigeons and even spotted pigeons. I love pigeons!' she exclaimed.

'I always thought of them as the bird version of rats.' I chewed on the bread. She looked at me with a brow raised.

'I mean, come on man, they eat everything, they're super unfriendly, they poop everywhere!'

'I see what you mean, but I think it's just overlooked by people. They're pretty cool too.' she shrugged.

I don't know why we're talking about pigeons in the middle of a lunch break, but I just loved it.

'Hey, thanks for uh, you know, sitting with me for lunch. I usually don't sit with anyone.' I flushed.

'No problem, I enjoy speaking about birds with another fellow bird-enthusiast.' and we both giggled.

We kept talking about birds the whole lunch break, it was lively,

'You play board games?'

'Not much offline, I do play a lot in boardgwames.com'

'Cool, let me send you an invite, let's play Lucky Numbers together!' I replied.

Suddenly, I felt the weird feeling rushing out. This is going to be a great year!

------------------------------

Apparently, I was wrong.

That happy feeling quickly faded away after Mr.Piper told me to stay after class to discuss my punishment.

'Ms.Westington.' he starated.

I was already shivering in my boots, I was tremulant(no this is not a made-up word, I just don't know what word to use when I'm really panicked).

'Yes, Mr.Piper?'

'I know this is the first day of school and that you have um...issues, but I really need you to understand that academics are very important, especially for future and your career. Now I know this may be a little overexaggering, but I'm just saying this to help you. Your sister has shown great results for years and you're falling behind a bit. I will try to help you as much as possible, but remember to always work hard and give your best.'

'But teacher, I am trying my best!' I exclaimed.

'Really?' He asked with one brow raised.

'You know I have 'issues' so i learn slower than the others. I just don't know what to do anymore.' I exhaled.

He didn't look at me in th eye, but rather down at my uncleaned sneakers.

'I suppose we can't do anything about that then. But try to do as much as possible, I'm sure you can do it.' he grimaced, which made me feel gocky all of a sudden.

'So, you'll forgive me for being late?'

'Forgiving you will create a bad example for the other students. We need to maintain an equillibrium in this school.'

'Oh.' Crud, mom's going to kill me.

'But, we have a new program for things like this.' he grinned.

Oh fruitcakes, what is he going to suggest this time?
