Finally, Ryuji had managed to rid himself of the "fallen angel" misunderstanding.
Inside a cave, Steve Trevor was soaking in a strange bath. The water was an unusual, luminescent blue, and it gave off a faint glow.
Even weirder, the water... seemed to flow upwards.
Steve, who had just gotten up, was startled when someone suddenly entered the cave. Instinctively, he crouched down.
"Are you serious!?"
Ryuji, who had just walked in, froze at the sight. His expression turned dark.
Really? Are you showing off?
Ryuji made an exaggerated motion of pulling up invisible pants and pointed toward the cave entrance. Without needing to speak English, his gestures got the point across: Cover up. Quick.
Steve, though not understanding Ryuji's language, got the message loud and clear. Grabbing an apron-like cloth, he hastily stepped out of the water and covered himself.
"Alright, you can come in now," Ryuji called.
Diana entered.
---
On the way here, Ryuji had been "educating" Diana on the differences between men and women. He used principles that emphasized boundaries and modesty—concepts she had never encountered before. For instance, men and women couldn't casually kiss, hug, or do anything overly intimate.
To Diana, the world beyond her island was unknown, and Ryuji had taken the opportunity to imprint these boundaries on her.
By the way, it was worth noting that Ryuji—not Steve—was the first man Diana had ever seen.
---
Because Ryuji's crash site was closer to the coast, Diana had discovered him first. Then she had gone on to rescue Steve afterward. Ryuji, of course, held no particular fondness for Steve.
After all, Diana was still a blank slate—innocent and curious about the world. To her, everything was fresh and new, which made her extremely impressionable.
And Steve Trevor just had to exist...
"Can I ask you a few questions?" Steve broke the silence.
Diana nodded.
"This place... where am I?"
"Paradise Island," she answered simply.
"No, I mean... what is this place really? Who are you people? And why is the water glowing? Also, why is your English so perfect?"
Ryuji, who was listening in the background, knew this exchange from memory. He didn't understand every word, but the meaning was clear enough.
"This is heaven!" Ryuji interjected with a smirk.
"What?" Steve frowned.
Diana let out a small chuckle. She clarified, "We Amazons exist to promote peace and protect mankind."
Steve looked unconvinced but nodded. "Alright. Thank you for saving me. That... uh... did you come to let me go?"
"I tried," Diana said softly. "I even asked them to send me with you—or anyone from the Amazons—but my mother refused."
"Can't blame her for that. If I were her, I wouldn't want someone I cared about near a battlefield either."
"Then why do you want to go back?" Diana questioned.
"No one wants to go back to the battlefield," Steve said firmly. "But if you see something wrong in the world, you either stand by or do something about it. My father used to tell me that. I've spent too long just standing by."
---
Diana didn't respond. She turned and walked out of the cave, and Ryuji followed after her.
"Hey!" Steve called out to him. "Thanks for crashing my plane and showing me a new world!"
After Diana translated, Ryuji replied sarcastically, "I hope it wasn't my ass that hit your propeller!"
Diana chuckled, shaking her head. She didn't translate the last part, leaving Steve standing there confused.
Steve blinked, bewildered. "What??"
---
Once they left the cave, Ryuji glanced at Diana. "So, you've made up your mind to fight, huh?"
Diana didn't answer directly. Instead, she said softly, "It is the duty of the Amazons to protect peace in this world."
"So... you're heading to get your gear now?" Ryuji asked.
"How did you know?" Diana turned to him, surprised.
"Your eyes are full of determination," Ryuji said, raising two fingers and pointing to her eyes.
---
"Aren't you coming with me?"
"Go... where? The battlefield?" Ryuji smiled faintly. He sat down on a nearby rock and patted the empty space beside him.
Diana hesitated for a moment but then sat next to him.
"You know... I'm not from this world."
There was a brief pause. Ryuji watched for any sign of surprise on her face. To his shock, there was none.
"Aren't you surprised?" he asked.
"Why should I be?" Diana replied calmly. "This world is but one intersection in the multiverse. The gods of Asgard—led by Odin—left Earth ages ago to create their own realm. They now rule over the Nine Realms."
She glanced off into the distance, her expression faintly troubled. Inwardly, she thought, If only the gods of Olympus had done the same, perhaps we wouldn't have fallen so far...
But there was no changing the past.
---
Ryuji scratched his head. Well... when you put it like that, this isn't so weird.
"In my world, things were peaceful. We had wars—World War I and World War II—but there weren't gods or magical realms like here. Maybe there were, but as an ordinary college student, I didn't know about them. When I saw Steve's clothes, I immediately guessed this was World War I."
He paused and added with a sigh, "That means I'm at least a hundred years away from my own time."
Diana looked at him curiously. "You're... what? Twenty years old? So that makes you... minus eighty years old?"
"Exactly."
"How did you get here?"
Ryuji shrugged. "If I knew, I'd tell you. I was just a college kid messing around with an old book I found—something called The Notes of a Magician. I followed the instructions like an idiot, and poof... next thing I know, I'm waking up behind a boulder on the beach."
Diana blinked. "..."
"That was my first time in a fight, too," Ryuji added softly. "It was also the first time I'd ever killed someone."
