Chapter 2 - "Murphy's Rebirth: Luxuries & Secrets"
New York. Long Island District.
In 1943, World War II was in full swing on the front battlefield, with soldiers sacrificing their blood in the fight for their motherland.
In the rear, New York, the largest city in the United States, presented a peaceful scene. Within it, the Long Island District, where the wealthy congregated, housed capitalists living in an enviable world of luxury.
Among them, Murphy, who had achieved little in his prior life, became one of the affluent after being reborn as 'Murphy Spencer.' He indulged in a life of luxurious capitalism, courtesy of his father—a wealthy capitalist.
Spencer Manor, an expansive estate situated in the heart of the Long Island District, is owned by Murphy's father, Thomas.
In the afternoon, a recliner is set up on the grass in the manor's backyard. Alongside the recliner is a round table adorned with an assortment of fruits and snacks.
Relaxing on the recliner, basking in the sun, is a 5-year-old Caucasian child with black hair and eyes—our protagonist, 'Murphy Spencer.'
Beneath the warm sunlight, Murphy adopts a leisurely posture, showing no inclination to move. He lounges with a nonchalant expression, mouth slightly agape.
"Ah~"
Then, a delicate white jade hand extended beside him, offering a peeled grape and delicately placing it into Murphy's mouth.
Murphy indulged in the plump and juicy grapes, chewing them a few times before swallowing the succulent flesh.
"Puff Puff," the remnants of the fruit pit were casually spat out onto the grass, adding a touch of whimsical decadence to the scene.
But at this moment, an irksome voice interrupted the tranquility. "Master, you've scattered the fruit core on the grass again. If the master notices, he'll scold you!"
The speaker was a 13 or 14-year-old girl, the owner of the small hand that had just fed Murphy grapes. She, too, possessed black hair and pupils, with a petite stature and a delicate baby face. Adorned in a tailored lace maid outfit that showcased her fair skin, albeit obscured by her apparent race, she was unmistakably of Asian descent.
Meet Eva James, Murphy's personal maid.
Eva is a relative of Murphy's mother, though the specific relationship eludes her memory. She recalls a tumultuous time during the invasion of China years ago when, as a child, her father entrusted her to Murphy's mother. She was subsequently taken to Britain under Murphy's mother's protection.
The backdrop to this connection was a carefully crafted drama by Murphy's parents, portraying the meeting of a Chinese girl with a British nobleman. Despite the original union facing disapproval from the Spencer family, with numerous attempts to thwart it, Murphy's birth testified to the eventual happiness of his parents.
Their family's relocation from England to the United States remains a mystery to Murphy. He is aware of the tale's broader strokes but lacks details regarding the circumstances leading to this move.
Eva, having accompanied Murphy's mother from the United Kingdom to the United States, found herself in the new country after Murphy's mother's demise during childbirth. Losing all contact with China at the tender age of nine, she naturally assumed the role of Murphy's little maid.
Murphy casually brushes off Eva's nagging about discarding fruit pits on the grass, attributing it to the old man's preoccupation with military matters.
The girl's face bulged with disagreement upon hearing Murphy's words, but she opted not to complain further. Familiar with Murphy's demeanor, she decided to change her approach.
Kneeling beside the grass where the fruit pit fell, the girl meticulously searched for the cores. She then squatted next to Murphy, gazing at him with sincerity.
"Master, not only do you disregard noble etiquette, but the fruit cores scattered on the grass are also troublesome to clean up. If left unattended, they might take root. If you find it truly unpleasant, you can spit them into my hands, and I'll handle the cleanup for you!"
As the girl spoke, she playfully embarrassed Murphy, eliciting a guilty feeling as he met Eva's large, watery eyes.
Despite Murphy's mature soul, he couldn't deny the girl's playful teasing. He gestured towards the fruits on the table, suggesting a compromise.
"Alright, I won't eat the fruits. You can squeeze them all into juice. That way, there won't be any leftovers."
While Murphy didn't explicitly express it, Eva, familiar with his character, recognized this as his way of compromising.
The girl stood up, concealing a smile behind her hand, ensuring Murphy couldn't see it. "Certainly, my young master. I'll prepare the juice for you!" With the fruit plate in hand, Eva left Murphy alone.
After Eva's departure, the once-lazy Murphy transformed into a serious demeanor. Having spent five years in this reborn world, he realized that a carefree life, relying solely on his wealthy father's abilities after World War II, was far from achievable.
Lying on the recliner, Murphy tapped the armrest rhythmically. A cascade of known information flashed through his mind, triggering a stream of inaudible nouns.
"The Super Soldier Project, Hellfire Club, Strategic Scientific Reserve."
With a surge of intensity in his thoughts, Murphy's black eyes deepened, revealing a playful yet expectant expression.
