Summary: Most people loved flowers, the colors, the fragrance. You hated them, they cut your throat, made you bleed, and filled your lungs, suffocating you slowly. It was as though you were being punished for loving someone who didn't love you back.

............................................................

Your throat burned and bled as you cough violently, locked in the bathroom away from everyone.

"Y/N? Are you ok in there?"

You stared at the bloody petals resting in the palm of your hand. The blood hardly noticeable with dark red color of the rose petals.

"I'm fine Chloe! Probably just ate something I shouldn't have!"

You waited until you heard her footsteps walk away, before wrapping the petals in a paper towel and throwing them in the trash. You stared at your reflection in the mirror, your eyes watering from the violent force of your coughing, blood on the corners of your mouth. You cleaned yourself up and left the bathroom. You forced a smile as you rejoined everyone at the table.

"Is everything alright darling? You look pale."

There he was the cause of your pain. The reason your lungs slowly filled with thorny roses and stole your breath. The devil himself Lucifer Morningstar. You waved a hand dismissively, forcing a laugh that sounded rather empty to your own ears.

"I'm fine Lucifer, I just ate something that didn't agree with me is all." You lied.

How many times had you lied to him now? To everyone, every time they asked if you were ok, if something was wrong, you lied. You lied like you weren't suffocating a little more every day, like your heart wasn't being chipped away at every time you saw him.

"I think I'm going to head home for the night. Thanks for the dinner Chloe, bye Dan. Tell Trixie I'll see her next time."

Lucifer stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.

"I'll take you darling."

"Oh that's ok Lucifer you don't have to. I can call a cab."

"Nonsense it's on the way back to Lux."

You shook your head, stepping around him.

"No really it's ok Lucifer."

He smirked at you, plucking your phone from your hands as you tried to call a cab.

"It's a ruse darling, I want to talk." He admitted.

You couldn't keep the smile from your face and you laughed.

"Fine." You caved.

"Wonderful! Have a good night Detective! Daniel."

The two of you walked out, heading to his car. You had almost forgotten how much you loved riding in his sleek black corvette. The drive was unusually quiet, normally you wouldn't mind the silence. However, this was Lucifer and a long car ride of silence with him was a bit unnerving. He had said he wanted to talk, but he wasn't doing much talking if any at all. He seemed to be thinking, looking at you every now and then. When he finally arrived at your house he still said nothing and you cleared your throat.

"Well... thank you for the ride Luci, I'll see you tomorrow?"

You grabbed the door handle but paused when Lucifer handed you a folded napkin.

"Don't forget these love."

Your heart pounded in your chest and you slowly unfolded the napkin. You felt your world crash down around, wrapped in the napkin were dried and wilting rose petals. You didn't look at him, how could you face him now? You had hid it for so long, but now he knew, and your efforts were for nothing.

"You left them at my house the last time you were there my dear, you know when you said you had a cold and left."

You closed your fist around them. You felt yourself begin to panic and you hurried from the car. You were vaguely aware of Lucifer following after you. You felt your throat tighten and you tried desperately not to cough, not to throw up those beautiful red petals you had come to hate so much.

"Y/N!"

He grabbed your arm turning you to face him and you pushed him away.

" Why didn't you tell me, you had that dreadful disease? I could have helped." He looked at you sadly.

You opened your mouth to respond but fell into a harsh and painful coughing fit. Lucifer held your shoulders, trying to offer comfort in any way he could. You slowly brought your hands away from your mouth. Your tears watered the delicate petals that rested in your palm, as you stared down at your hands. There were more petals than usual.

"No, Lucifer you can't help. You can't help because it's ." You muttered.

He looked at you confused, and grabbed your hands, you looked up at him sadly.

"I love you, you idiot. And I'm willing to live with this even if it means, I die, because I never want to forget that feeling. It to love you, but I couldn't live with myself if I ever stopped feeling that way about you." You smiled as you let the petals float to the ground at your feet.

Lucifer watched you cry, and he couldn't bare to watch you in so much pain. Thinking he didn't love you back.

"But I love you."

The shock on your face must have shown because he chuckled and pulled you into his arms. He held you close, kissing the top of your head.

"Oh my darling Y/N, haven't you figured it out by now? I'm hopelessly and madly in love with you."

The feeling of air flooding your lungs was almost too much for you to handle. It had been so long since you had breathed so freely, without the thorns scratching and tearing at you. Without the petals that burned your throat. You held onto him tightly as if you were afraid letting go meant he would disappear and you'd wake up with flowers suffocating you slowly.

"You're alright now love, I won't let you feel that pain again." Lucifer whispered holding you tighter.
