Chapter 37: Strawberry Rookie Card

Darryl passed the corner where Vintner was standing at full speed. Vintner saw him and whistled. Darryl was holding his baseball mitt under his armpit. There was a baseball tucked inside it. Vintner wondered if it was the ball that they'd purchased at the Yankee game or if Darryl's mother made him get a new ball. Vintner's whistle was loud enough that Darryl stopped in his tracks for a second, wondering what could have made such a noise. Darryl turned at the sound and looked towards Vintner. When Darryl saw Vintner, Darryl froze. Vintner waved to Darryl, motioning for him to come closer. Vintner was still nervous about stepping out into the street. For a moment Darryl looked unsure of what he should do. He looked around him, checking to see if anyone was watching him.
