“Don’t talk about Novak.” Joe started walking. “Just take me to Cooke.”

Crawford sighed, but didn’t say another word. He led Joe through the west wing, into the heated, lighted area of Cooke’s office. “Remember what I said, Joe,” he whispered, when Joe entered Cooke’s office. “Keep your head up.” He left, putting another guard in charge at the door.

“Sit down, Joseph.” Cooke motioned to the empty chair across his desk. “Please.”

Joe had been here so many times, it was starting to feel familiar. “What do you want?”

“Have some of this.” Cooke pushed a bowl of noodles Joe’s way.

Joe wanted it. Needed it. But, no, he wouldn’t take another thing from this man.
