Chapter 42
“Hurry,” Dubois said, groping for the matches and candles. “Let’s melt the tips and set them into those cups there, before it’s too dark to see.” They quickly set about lighting the candles and securing them into the cups. Joe turned the burner off just as the last light went off in the hall. Through the soft glow of the candle light, he could see Dubois’s thrilled expression. “Now, let’s try this chocolate.”
Joe brought tea and poured alcohol into their steaming cups. The mix of tea and rye was new to him, but very satisfying. “I’ll use my board.” He set everything up, and sitting face to face on the cot, they broke the bread. Using the back of a spoon, Joe slathered the bread with soft cheese and butter.
“Joe…no, save some butter.”
Joe took a good sip of his hot drink and frowned at him. “We don’t need to save nothing.”
“It’s for later…In the night.”
