Light Years Away

Story of best friends, Kang Sola and Xue Guangxi, as they traverse their journey through adulthood, amidst conflicting choices and internal issues within themselves and from their past. Will they be able to resolve their personal struggles and find a common ground towards happiness? Will they have to compromise to achieve it? Will they end up together and overcome the threshold of their friendship into lovers or remain as platonic friends and each other's family? ---- She balled her fists, getting ready to punch the man in the face if the situation requires. They are, after all, alone in the room. Sometimes she forgets that Xue Guangxi was of the opposite gender – a man more than capable of beguiling innocent women when he sets his mind to the task. ‘Perhaps he had been gone for too long that I had forgotten how his charms work. That fact never left my head, but experiencing it firsthand… Well, Nah!!!’ She tried to shake whatever silliness her mind entertains despite her prudence. But what her neutral poker face could hide, her berserkly widened eyes could not conceal. Nevertheless, even if he noticed, the young man did not point it out. He was more concerned and occupied by other matters. Matters of far greater importance… …For example, her safety. She blinked several times, trying to disrupt the connection their locked gazes somehow managed to forge. She bowed her head, still blinking, and darted her lowered gaze to the floor. She straightened up her sitting position and swatted both of the man’s hands on her shoulders without force. But Xue Guangxi held her in place. “Look at me.” “What is it now, Guangxi?” She whispered. Her voice, thin and fragile and barely audible. Perhaps more from the earlier adrenaline pushed a blush on her face. Perhaps, it wasn’t the adrenaline to be blamed. She tried to swat his hands for the second time, but his grip only tightened, making his point more pronounced. Either he obeys or she does. Most of the time, Xue Guangxi always gave in to Kang Sola’s whims. Even when his temper wasn’t too great to be proud of, at the end of every argument, he lets the girl win. But in this instance, he wanted to be more assertive. “You always make me worry, Sola.” He breathed with all solemnity, like a prayer. The clasp of his hands on her shoulders tightened. She could feel it. She winced. Then, without further ceremony or introduction, he pressed her into a tight embrace, full of concern. Any person would be able to discern if a form of skinship was of sincere nature or not. Kang Sola could tell his was of genuine care and concern for her. “You are far more delicate than you think. God, Sola!” He cradled her head with his right hand placed just above her nape. Some of her balayage locks laced his manly fingers. ---- Other Info: Light story about friendship, family, love, and adulting. HOW THE WEEKEND WENT

"What are you doing, Uncle? Aunty?" Chen Lihua lethargically rubbed off the sleep in her eyes with her left knuckle. She stood by Kang Sola's room's doorway in her striped teal and white pajama. A cow plushie dangled from her right hand.

Kang Sola and Xue Guangxi froze in place on the bed. Awkwardly positioned, their limbs and body were interlocked in a more unusual way and *ahem* sensual way than what's deemed normal. The flat of Kang Sola's right foot kissed Xue Guangxi's chin, while her hand grabbed bits of his spiky hair. The young man's hands curled around her ankle nearest to his face in a futile attempt to free himself from her good-morning kick. Not under his own volition, his head tilted in the direction of her hair-pulling antics.

He felt the aching sensation prick his scalp. "Ah! Ah! I surrender!!!" He said repeatedly as he tapped her several times more.

So much ferocity in the morning it was, right when they both opened their eyes.

The night before went on in a blur. Kang Sola had forgotten that she had been defeated by tiredness wrapped in her friend's warm, comforting embrace and fell asleep.

Xue Guangxi was left with the task of delivering them both to their accommodation. He carried her – for the third time now since he returned – and laid the young woman on her bed.

Sitting on her bed beside her, he lingered for a few more moments, watching her sleep.

"You have such a gentle façade in slumber, especially when you don't get reminded of the past." He talked to her even if he knew that she wouldn't be able to answer him or even acknowledge him.

He let out a dry laugh. "Siblings, huh? That's stupid."

He lied on his back, beside her, and stared at the ceiling. "Siblings, my foot. We will never be siblings in this lifetime. Third pair of twins? You wish. That's the daftest idea I've ever heard." He clicked his tongue. "Whatever."

He blabbered on until his eyelids drooped lower and lower.

Come morning, Kang Sola popped her eyes open when she found herself with the company of a man.

'Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Where am I?' Unmoving, she tried to recall the events of the previous night. 'I didn't even get to drink real alcohol. I was not intoxicated!'

'Who the hell is this man?!'

When she moved in slow motion and finally take a glance at her bedmate, fury enveloped her. "Guangxi!!! I'll kill you!!! I'll kill you right now!!!"

And her words were not spoken in vain.

The poor man woke up underneath her, receiving the loving force of her pillows.

Then, she maneuvered and decided to spar with him without his consent.

"Ah!!! Sola! Sola!!! Help!!! Anyone, help!!!"

"Mother!!!!"

"Huhuhuhu!!!"

He did not know that she had learned martial arts while he was away.

"You!! You!!!" She barked. It was frightening.

"Why are you sleeping here?! Don't you have your own room?! You took advantage of my unconscious state. Huh?! How could you?!"

Her limbs and her pillows went flying in his direction.

In the middle of it all, he found the guts to snicker in amusement.

She paused in bewilderment. "Why, you're enjoying it, aren't you?!" Then she bellowed in her bedroom voice. Strands of her unruly balayage waist-length hair crowned her face and fell like graceful curtains of caramel around her. It reflected the yellow light of the sun and shone with its splendor.

That was when she decided to do a high kick while leaning down on the bed.

Even if it must have appeared violent, he knew Kang Sola was controlling her strength and did not kick at a hundred percent of her ability. Even the hair-grabbing seemed controlled.

He found it oddly funny.

That's why while being attacked, he couldn't help but laugh and chuckle while trying to stop her, too, and convince her that it was a sheer mistake on his side.

Then, Chen Lihua appeared and disrupted their plight of passion.

The two froze. Kang Sola had no choice but to free her victim-slash-unwilling-sparring-partner.

A broad grin on his face, Xue Guangxi thanked his savior internally and answered her question, "We're just playing wrestling. It's a good way to start the day with some exercise. But you and Xiao Lingtian shouldn't try it, alright? It requires mastery of the skill."

Kang Sola gawked at him in disbelief. "Really?"

"Hehehe." He stood up, faked up a yawn then stretched his limbs. "I'm hungry. Shall we eat breakfast, ladies?" He turned alternately between his niece and his bedmate. He blinked enticingly, intended to get away with the situation with his good looks and humor.

Kang Sola massaged that part of her face where her brows knitted in a furrow. She went past him and tugged Chen Lihua out of the room by her wrist, while the little girl tugged at her plushie.
