Chapter 5 - Unawakened Trash?

Then, as Darius was confused as to why he was stuck here, Ashe seemed like she was about to tell why.

"Huh, looks like you don't remember. You're an Unawakened, I'm sorry to say it like this, but you're the trash of this society."

'I'm trash?' thought Darius, not sure what she meant by being unawakened, however, based on the description she gave it certainly didn't seem like it was the best.

"You do know that if you go into the city, you'll have pretty much no choice but to live in the Slums," she added seeing that Darius didn't react to her earlier words.

There was a reason why he wasn't in a bad mood, the person she was currently describing was the old him.

There was literally no way that Darius would be as useless as the old one. He knew martial arts, he knew how to fight and many more things. In no way was he going to be useless.

However, when hearing about living in the Slums, he wasn't as optimistic as before.

"But, that thing you talked about, being an Unawakened. Couldn't I become an Awakened instead?" asked Darius, in hopes of her saying yes.

However, when Darius said that Ashe seemed to be losing herself in her thoughts. She seemed to be thinking about what he had just said.

Darius waited patiently beside her, as he hoped her answer to be somewhat positive.

"Do you really want to become an Awakened?" asked Ashe, making sure that Darius was certain of his answer.

The tone which she had just used made Darius feel uncertain about this whole thing as it seemed quite serious.

Before answering "yes", he would need to have a little bit more information about what is an Awakened as he still completely ignored it.

"Uh, can you explain in detail what's an Awakened?" inquired Darius.

Ashe nodded and started explaining, "Sure if that will make your decision easier. Basically, becoming an Awakened is the fact that you are surpassing the human's capabilities. By simply awakening, you will be able to surpass the borders of the human realm. What I mean is that you'll be able to run faster than unawakened who trained to run for their entire life"

Darius nodded as Ashe continued talking as it seemed like she wasn't done.

"This all seems fun and all, getting stronger. However, being an Awakened, your life will surely be one filled with constant as you will have to fight monsters to get stronger. Also, your future as an Awakened will be determined by the Rank of your system," she added which concluded her explanation.

Darius started taking in as much information as he humanly could as all this was new to him.

Darius in general, was intrigued in becoming stronger, so when she talked about surpassing the human abilities, he had already become sure of his answer. He wanted to awaken.

However, based on the tone that Ashe had used earlier, it clearly wasn't going to be a simple process.

Ashe looked at the pensive Darius, as she asked, "So, do you want to awaken or not?"

Darius came out of his thoughts hearing her, and responded. "Of course, I want to. Doesn't everyone love a life full of danger?"

Hearing that, Ashe's eyebrows furrowed as she hadn't expected such an answer out of Darius.

"What made you change like that? Weren't you the one that always told me that you liked living away from all possible danger?"

'Wow, the old owner of this body really was a little bitch,' thought Darius as he kept a straight face.

"I guess I changed my mind, ahaha," said Darius, laughing a little to change this awkward atmosphere.

"Hmm, sure," muttered Ashe, looking weirdly at Darius.

"Well, I guess people can change, however the method to awaken, especially at your age is quite risky," continued Ashe, not questioning Darius's behaviour anymore.

"How risky?" asked Darius as he didn't want to die awakening after all.

This was his second chance at life and he didn't want to throw it away before it even started.

"Hmm, well... it's not that bad because I'm here actually, however, if you had been alone then you probably could have died attempting it," said Ashe, still revealing what the method actually was.

"Then, what do I need to do?" inquired Darius.

"Well, nothing too complicated, you simply need to deal the killing blow to a monster," said Ashe, right away.

When she revealed the method, Darius immediately understood why she said that it was going to be a lot easier with her around. All he would need to do would be to end the life of an already dying monster.

However, before they could start this process, it seemed that Ashe was still hesitating whether or not this was a good decision.

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

Darius, however, didn't have a single doubt in his mind as he answered, "Yes."

Then, Ashe turned her back and started walking forward without looking back.

"Come on, don't stand still, let's go kill a monster," she said as she headed into the D-Rank Danger Zone that was surrounding this small little cabin.

Darius hearing her say that, started to follow right behind her as he didn't want to be left behind. However, as he thought that awakening was going to be a walk in the park as he was going to have Ashe helping him, Ashe added something which she hadn't said before.

"However, don't think that I will kill the monster for you. To awaken you'll need to kill it yourself. However, I'll make sure that you won't die."

Hearing her say that, Darius wasn't as confident as before in awakening, however, he knew that with the training he had gone through in his past life that this shouldn't be that much trouble.

But he still didn't know if killing those monsters was going to be hard or not.

"Here, a weapon, you'll need it," said Ashe, as she threw a small knife without even looking back.

'What is up with her?' thought Darius as that knife could have actually hurt him if he hadn't caught it.
