Legend of Limits

Jace attempts to flee from his former allies with James's journal in a hazy sequence of events, dialogue, and past occurances that the reader must attempt to piece together to figure out what's going on behind the scenes. As Jace attempts to uncover the truth behind his friends' betrayal, Jace will have to tangle with his former allies, current friends, and ruthless enemies as he makes his way across the continent with Quartz trying to kill him at almost all times and James's grimoire in hand. Questioning Quartz

Jace: "What spell was cast upon you?"

Quartz: "I am a renowned sorcerer. I would be able to tell if a spell was cast upon me so long as I was in my right mind, and I sense no spell cast upon me."

"Why did you betray James's last request?"

"Oh, I see how it is, so you are going to make us out as the villains? You know what James said on his death bed and so do the rest of us. You cannot manipulate the truth in your favor."

"What do you mean?"

"I see no reason to elaborate."

"Where are North, Alex, and Hazel?"

"..."

"Are you going to answer me?"

"Why are you hiding the contents of James's journal from us?"

"Do you really not remember? James and I agreed that it would be for the best if the information in his journal was never known by anyone except the leader of the Wanderers until the journal was either destroyed or no longer necessary."

"That is not what James said."

"Then what did James say?"

"..."

"We can't come to a mutual understanding if you won't even give me a glimpse of your perspective."

"..."

"Fine. Have it your way. Here's today's lunch. We ran out of meat from Yore yesterday, so you'll have to settle with fish. We're almost at Greenside, so please try to bear the limited menu until we've arrived."

"Why are you unwilling to set me free once we reach the mainland?"

"I can see the malice in your eyes. You won't just walk away without a fight, and I don't want to risk you using the citizens in a way similar to what you did in Tidebreak."

"Regardless, even you must know how pointless it would be to have Dr. Collagen look at this magical malformity you made up. How do you expect even a professional to do anything about a spell that does not even exist?"

"..."

"Oh? Why so quiet? You were so talkative just a moment ago."

"This is a waste of time. I feel like I'm trying to talk a wall into walking."

"Ah yes, putting all the blame for your failures on others as usual. I'm sure James would've loved to see how little you've changed."

Quartz and Jace did not converse again for the rest of the voyage.

For anyone who may be confused by the way I formatted this chapter, the speaker alternates between Jace and Quartz every line after their labeled lines at the beginning of the chapter. If readers would prefer each and every line of conversation to be labeled, be sure to let me know in the comments.
