Constable Gregory hung his head. “We must admit defeat for now. They got away, just disappeared. Their horses were stronger, faster than ours. And of course we were pulling our paddy wagon, which is much heavier than a carriage. Tomorrow morning, we will come back to continue searching. Since this is a murder now, we will probably bring a posse.”
“Have you figured out how to get Clementine up there?”” Hugh pointed to the top of the slope.
“I have no idea how to go back up,” Gregory said, serious and fixated on the steep slope. “I need to make Constable Henry aware of this situation, too. He is waiting up top. There is a rope in the wagon that will be useful.”
“You should be able to get Henry’s attention to help you. Matilda and I still have business back in town today. We will let you do your job, and we will take our leave,” said Hugh.
