"Firs"-years over here!

A lamp came boobing over the heads of the students.

"All right there, Harry?"

Hagrid's big hairy face beamed over the sea of heads.

"Come one, follow me_any more first years?

Mind yer step, now!

First years follow me!

Slipping and stumblingly Neville along with the rest of the students followed Hagrid down what seemed to be a steep, narrow path. Nobody spoke much creating an atmosphere of pin drop silence.

"Yeh will get your first sight of Hogwarts in a sec," Hagrid called over his shoulder, just round this bend here."

There was a loud "Oooooh!".

The narrow path had opened suddenly on to the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other side, it's windows sparkling in the in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many towers and turrets.

Soon everyone had divided into groups of four and got in a boat.

Hagrid had a boat to himself and led the students little boat, asked them to bow their heads when they approached the cliff, finally checked if all the students had safely arrived.

Once the giant confirmed that they were all safe and sound.

He raised a gigantic fist and knocked three times on the Castle door.

The door swung open at once. A tall black haired witch in emerald green robes stood there. She had a very stern face.

"The first years, Professor McGonagall," said Hagrid.

"Thank you Hagrid. I'll take them from here. "

She then led them through the Castle.

The stone walls were lit with flaming torches, the ceiling was too high to make out, and a magnificent marble staircase facing them led them to upper floors.

While the other students were admiring the Castle Neville looked at his new mission in confusion.

Mission Failure: Host replacement by death and transmigration.

Wow!

Isn't this mission too kind!

He could see a bar showing the completion rate when he willed it.

Hmmm! It's only 1 completion rate for the Entrance hall.

I bet it will be easy to complete this mission.

Meanwhile McGonagall had led them into an empty chamber off the hall. All of them huddled together nervously.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room.

" The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin.

Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding Witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with most points is awarded the House cup, a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours."

" The Sorting ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourself as much as you can while you are waiting."

"I shall return when we are ready for you," said Professor McGonagall. "Please wait quietly."

She left the chamber.

Harry swallowed and asked Ron, "How exactly do they sort us into houses?"

"Fred and George said something about duelling a troll.But I hope they were joking."

Neville interjected, "Not possible it would take too much time. It must be a test that does not require any magical knowledge from us."

He too was nervous about the hat looking into his memories and exposing his abnormal existence.

Neville looked around the crowd of students anxiously and found that everyone else looked terrified too. No one was talking much except Hermione, who was whispering very fast about the spells she had learnt and wondered which one she would need.

After a brief wait during which several students screamed when pearly white and slightly transparent ghosts glided across the room talking to each other and barely paying any attention to the new students.

Soon Professor McGonagall arrived and instructed them to move along as the time had come for their sorting to start.

Neville gasped when he entered the Great Hall as it was even more mesmerising than what he had expected.

It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles which were floating in mid-air over four long tables where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets. At the top of the hall was another long table were the teachers were sitting.

The hundreds of faces staring at them looked like pale lanterns in the flickering candlelight.

Neville looked up as he saw a velvety black ceiling dotted with stars.

He could hear Hermione whisper," It's bewitched to look like the sky outside, I read about it in Hogwarts: A History."

Even then it was hard to believe there was a ceiling at all, and that the Great Hall didn't simply open on to the heavens.

ProfessorMcGonagall silently placed a four-footed stool in front of the first years. On top of the stool she put a pointed wizard's hat.This hat was patched, frayed and extremely dirty.

Everyone in the Great Hall was now staring at the hat. For a few seconds, there was complete silence after which the hat started to twitch. A rip near the brim opened wide like a mouth-and the hat began to sing. He then heard the hat sing its song about the sorting process.

The whole Hall burst into a great applause when the hat finished its song.

It then bowed to each of the four tables and then became quite still again.

The song quelled all the questions that the students had about the sorting and soothed their nerves except Neville.

Harry and Ron were relieved that they didn't have to wrestle against a troll. Hermione looked a bit disappointed that she would not need to show her spell mastery.
