Unexpected visit

It's been days since I saw Lisa last. Aunt Mary has made alcohol her best friend since she has nothing to do other than stay at home all day, and uncle Mark was due to come home today.

The time passed extremely slow during school hours. Chloe didn't notice my dull mood. Nicholas was no where to be found, and Miles seemed to have backed off from asking me out.

Fortunately, I had finished my tests and I had taken the ones I missed.

When I got to the front door of the house, I hesitated a little.

I don't know why, but I felt anxious. My heart couldn't stop beating fast.

I felt like something was awaiting me behind the door.

"Okay Raven, deep breaths. You can do this."

I open the door and at first I'm met with silence. I walk inside and gently close the door.

Then I suddenly hear a thrilling laughter coming from the kitchen and I pause. The laughter is followed by a male voice I recognized all too well.

"And she thought I wouldn't mind."

I walked straight to the kitchen to see them sitting by the counter opposite each other with a bottle of vodka between them.

They both look at me and aunt Mary's smile falters a little.

What the fudge is he doing here?!

"You're home." She says dryly.

I bow my head a little then I turn to him.

"What are you doing here?" I ask.

"I-"

"You know him?" Aunt Mary interrupts.

"Yes." He smiles. "She's the reason I'm here."

"The reason you're here?" I could hear the strain in her voice and I don't know if he hears it too but he ignores it.

He nods. "Yes."

"You're not here for Lisa?" She asks again.

He looks at her confused "Who's Lisa?"

Oh god.

Aunt Mary doesn't say anything for a while and suddenly, she stands and grabs the vodka bottle.

"I should go upstairs. if you need me, I'm going to probably be asleep." She says and walks out.

I turn to him back.

"What are you doing here?!" I whisper shout.

He just smiles at me. "Let's take it outside."

He walks past me and towards the door. I sigh and follow him outside.

When we reach outside, I fold my arms together and look at him.

"I'm waiting for an answer."

He merely shrugs. "I'm here for our date."

"Date? Miles I told you-"

"What you told me was that you were not in the mood to go out."

"And I'm not!" I say, already getting frustrated.

"That's why I came to spend it with you here."

What?

I look at him disbelief. "What?"

He smiles. "I came to spend time with you here. I came, met your mom and she's a lovely woman by the way, but you weren't home."

"She's not my mom." I gritted.

"Oh sorry. My bad." He apologizes. "But the fact here is that I'm here."

I take a deep breath. "You should leave."

"Why?"

"Miles, I have a terrible headache and you seem to making it worse."

"Okay ouch." He puts his hand on his chest and feigns hurt.

I sigh. "Miles-"

"Can I stay?" He takes a step forward. "I promise I'd be good." He gives me a sly smile.

I take a step back. "I-"

"I believe she told you to leave." Says a gruff voice behind us.

Miles smiles broadly and turns around. "Hart, my friend!" He shouts. "I've been expecting you!"

"I'm sorry for keeping you waiting." Nick replies dryly.

Miles waves his hand. "It's nothing. I can wait for you all day."

"Don't you have somewhere to be?"

Miles shakes his head. "Not that I remember."

Nick tilts his head to the left a little. "You sure about that?" He stands straight. "Hasn't Rick called you yet? That's surprising."

Miles looks in confusion. "Why would-"

His phone rings, interrupting what he was about to say.

He looks at the caller ID and immediately answers.

"Hello...yes I'm well aware.....what?.....I'll be there." He hangs up and looks at me.

"I guess I'll have to see you later sweetie."

"I guess that must have been Rick." Nick says playfully.

"Yes it was, but it's nothing." But Miles playful expression doesn't faze.

"Sure."

Miles winks at me and walk away but not without bumping Nick's shoulder.

He looks down and gives a small smile before finally looking at me.

"Hey." I give him a little wave.

"How are you feeling?" He takes a step towards me.

"Peachy."

"I'm sorry left that day."

He must be referring about the hospital.

"It's no problem. I wasn't worried."

Now that's a lie.

He nods. "I didn't leave because of what you told me." He says.

"I didn't think it was."

Another lie.

"Well, I had something to take care of and I didn't know it would take this long." He scratched the back of his hair.

"So that's why you weren't in school." I mutter.

"So forgive me?"

I tilt my head a little.

"I'm not angry."

"I'm sure you must've felt I made a run for it after hearing you out. I'm sorry for making you feel that way."

"It's fine." I repeat.

He nods and looks behind me. "You are home alone?"

"My aunt's home."

"Your aunt?"

I nod. "She got fired a few days ago."

He raises an eyebrow. "She did?"

I nod. "And she has been drowning herself in alcohol ever since."

"She must look pitiful."

I stare at him for a moment.

"Did you have anything to do with it?"

"I spoke with my dad a few days ago, but I never told him anything."

I nod. "If you say so. Listen I have to go inside before I get in trouble but I'll see you in school okay?"

"Wait. Um.." He scratches the back of his head.

"What?" I urge him when he doesn't say anything.

"Nevermind. I'll see you tomorrow." He says and I wave at him.

"Bye."

He nods and walks away leaving me standing outside to figure out what it was that he wanted to say.
