Chapter 29

Kurt was sitting up in the bed, slouched back against the headboard, IV line still in his arm. He lowered his gun.

“Any word on getting us out of here?”

“Yeah. It’s not a pleasant one but the best we can do.” She gave him the details. “We are supposed to meet him in three hours.”

“Okay.” Kurt looked vaguely embarrassed. “Can you help me get dressed?”

He shivered as he held onto her shoulders to steady himself as she pulled the pants up to his waist and zipped them. This time she pressed her hand to his face as he sat down.

“I think you might be running a fever,” she said.

“Infection?”

“Could be. Give me an estimate on how many hours it’s been since you were shot.”

Kurt glanced at his watch. “Somewhere between twenty and twenty two. How much does this increase my risk of death?”
