Chapter 45: The Wolf has Teeth

Lizzy had been scared before of course- scared, unnerved, frightened – both as a law enforcement officer and as a plain, old-fashioned human being. Hell, she was just a couple of days removed from taking a pool cue to the skull outside of a tavern in downtown Stockard Creek, so she was certainly capable of setting aside whatever emotion gripped her to fight on.

But this..

… this was different.

This was not a typical sensation of fright or unease, but instead a full-on assault to her senses that something incredibly powerful and malevolent – something way beyond her capabilities to handle on her own – had just turned its attention on her.

When she had started up the hillside, her visibility blurred by the rain and the swaying bushes and tree branches and the creeping darkness, she knew there was no one backing her up just yet. There were no sirens in the distance and, if Keith was anywhere close, the storm kept her from hearing his vehicle, anyway.
