Chapter 39

When I woke up the next morning, my heart was hammering in my chest. The front door slamming open and closed startled me. At least, I thought it was morning. I glanced at the clock and saw that it was well into the afternoon. Sunlight was creeping through the blackout shades. As I started waking up, I heard arguing.

“What were you thinking?” James snapped. “You look like you haven’t fed in weeks!”

“It couldn’t wait,” a deep, gravelly voice murmured quietly. That familiar voice sent my heart thundering against my breastbone. I had almost forgotten what he sounded like. “Are you okay, Jessica?”

“I’m tougher than I look. You though. You look like sh*t,” I heard Jessica say.

I pulled the covers off of me, rubbing my eyes before putting my glasses on. I opened the door and looked out to the living room. Rowan’s eyes instantly snapped to mine. Those sapphire eyes were dark like the dropoff of an ocean shelf. They swirled when they saw me, and Rowan tore his eyes away.
