Chapter 38

I couldn’t run fast enough to James’s apartment. I didn’t care about what happened to me, but Jessica? Jessica only got hurt because of me. I didn’t know what happened, but I knew that it was my fault. Why else would someone hurt her?

James opened the door, “Good, you’re here. Come in, she’s on the couch.”

“Do you know what happened?” I asked, ushering myself inside.

“No. She passed out as soon as she got here,” James explained, closing and locking the door behind me.

When I saw Jessica, all back and blue, my heart broke. Is this what it felt like when she saw me? I rushed over to her side and knelt on the floor, holding her hand. “Why didn’t you take her to the hospital?” I asked, my gaze snapping over to James.

James looked as worried as I felt. He put his hands up in defense. “Because those bruises are indicative of a vampire attack. We can’t go to the hospital. No human could have grabbed her like that.”
