Chapter 37

The phone call I received from Isabella shot ice directly into my veins. Marco made bail last night. He was out. I don’t even know where he got the $100K for his bail. I was struggling to keep the phone close to my ear because my hand became numb. I could hear Isabella sobbing on the other line.

“He’s out. What do I do? What if he comes after me?” Isabella asked, her voice wavering.

I took a deep breath, and I tightened my fists, tightening my resolve. “Calm down, Isa. You are home with your parents now. There is a police car station outside of your house until the hearing. You’re okay.”

I heard Isabella take a quivering breath. “You’re right. What are you going to do? Will you go home?”

“No,” I stated firmly. “I’ve worked too hard to restart here. He’s not taking this from me again. I’ll be okay.”

“Be careful, Astrid. I shouldn’t have to tell you this, but he’s dangerous. Marco was obsessed with you,” Isabella said uncomfortably.
