"Katherine, I never thought I'd see you again!" Mirabel exclaimed, rushing to embrace her friend as soon as she walked through the door.
"Come on, Mirabel, stop acting like a baby! You are not a child anymore," Katherine said, breaking the embrace and sitting down on the couch by the door.
Mirabel hurried to her freezer to get Katherine a cold juice. She sat next to Katherine, acting as if she was seeing her for the first time in ten years. Even though they had met four days ago, Mirabel felt as though she hadn't seen Katherine in years. She missed her childhood friend more than she could have imagined.
"Katherine, it's only been four days and you look different. Is marriage really as amazing as people say it is? I can't wait to get married."
Katherine burst into laughter at Mirabel's words. If she knew how hard marriage could be, she wouldn't even want to hear that word, let alone get married.
Not only would she have to put her husband above everything else, but also deal with his family. It can be so exhausting sometimes.
"Marriage? Girl, if you knew what that meant, you would run away from it," she said coldly.
Mirabel, who was quick to read situations, took her hands into hers. "Katherine, if something is wrong, tell me. I want to hear everything."
Staring at Mirabel's emerald eyes, which had a way of making her succumb to her words, she began to cry. She let out all the tears she had held back all this while.
"Mirabel, I want to die, but I want to live at the same time," she whimpered.
"Do you want me to die from shock? How can you think of dying? Have you forgotten we promise to grow old together and scold our children even with gray hairs?" Mirabel asked, tears clustered in her own eyes too.
"I did not know how I had come to hate myself. I didn't understand why I deserve this suffering."
She continued to cry until she was done crying. Mirabel handed her a handkerchief to clean her face before they continued their conversation.
"Katherine, when do you start feeling depressed?"
Mirabel's question took her by surprise, making her eyes widen. She is okay. After everything she had been through in Dayton resident, there was no way she could be depressed now.
"No. I've never been depressed in my life," Katherine replied, her voice filled with conviction.
"Then, why do you seem so close to the edge? Like you are barely holding on by a thread?" She asked as if she was interrogating her.
"Mirabel, I am not on the edge. Maybe I am this way because I am not familiar with marriage," Katherine replied, avoiding eye contact with her.
"If you don't tell me the truth, who else are you going to tell? The Katherine I knew always put up with things, so tell me if anything is wrong. Let's fix it together, you can't do everything by yourself," her words made Katherine suddenly willing to open up.
Katherine exhaled deeply, wondering if Mirabel would believe her. She gathered all the courage in her to tell Mirabel. "Mira, I was killed by my lover. I woke up a day before my wedding, and–"
"And this is supposed to be a novel, right? Like, you suddenly die and wake up again?" She chuckled at the cheap trick Katherine was trying to use. "If you won't tell me, it is fine. I will wait for you to come and tell me whatever that is bothering you when you are ready. For now, fulfil the promise you made at your wedding."
Katherine smiled at Mirabel's understanding. She wished Mirabel was her elder sister, that would have been the best thing that ever happened in her life.
"Sure, I am going to spoil you today. Just tell me where you want to go and what you want to do," Katherine brought out her card and placed it on the table.
Mirabel giggled at how Katherine was acting up. She never knew Katherine would be able to talk like this. Ever since they were kids, she had been the one doing all the talking. The only thing Katherine was good at was questioning her.
"Spare me a moment, I have to dress up," Mirabel said, and excused herself.
She put on her black halter gown, which Katherine bought for her on her nineteenth birthday. Matched up with her silver pairs of stiletto heels, she walked up to Katherine.
"Do I look bad?"
Her question made Katherine chuckle. How can she ask such a question when she already knows the answer?
"Do I need to answer that question?" She asked with her brow raised.
Mirabel ignored her and walked out. Katherine followed her and they got into Mirabel's car, which drove off as soon as they were inside.
After they arrived at their destination; Mirabel's favorite eatery, they stepped out of the car and walked in.
They reserved a VIP section, which they went over to sit. The eatery, which was clearly intended for the wealthy, was also Katherine's first time. Since she was always busy with work, she had only been to a few eateries and restaurants.
They received their orders shortly after they sat down. Katherine, had a bite of the meal, but somehow she didn't feel like eating it. All of a sudden, she craved the rice cake she had days ago.
"Mirabel, I don't feel like eating," she informed Mirabel who was already halfway through with hers.
"Since you are not hungry, I should call my boyfriend over so that the food won't be wasted," she suggested.
"Sure. I would even like to know the man who is about to steal my woman away from me," Katherine said warmly.
Mirabel giggled shyly at her friend's words before she brought her phone out of her purse and texted him. "He will be here in a few minutes. He works around here," she informed her after texting him.
"I can't wait to see–"
"That is him," Mirabel interrupted her the moment she saw her boyfriend from outside the window. She quickly called one of the waitresses and informed her that the man coming in was her guest.
A minute later, the man was led to Mirabel's table.
Mirabel turned her gaze to Katherine, who thought she was possibly dreaming. "Kathe, this is him, Asher, the man who stole my heart."
"Asher, meet my best friend, Katherine," she introduced the both of them to each other.
As if it was the first time they were meeting, she stretched her hand for a handshake.
"It is nice meeting you." They both echoed at the same time.
'What is happening? Why is Mirabel dating him? Asher of all guys?' She thought as she recalled how she introduced Asher to Annabella. It was exactly this way.
I am sorry for the delay before releasing this chapter. since I am fasting and also going to school, I always end up exhausted before I could even write. I hope everyone understands. thank you.
