In just one day, Nylon Music Magazine's latest issue hit the shelves, with music critics reviewing and analyzing recent songs. However, the most talked-about topic was, naturally, Avril's new song, Sk8er Boi.
In his column, Blackjack praised it highly: "Avril proves herself once again. She's not just a one-hit wonder; she has her own creative style and ideas that resonate deeply with the younger generation. Even while I was working, my six-year-old daughter couldn't help but wave her chubby little hands when she heard the song and remembered a few lyrics after listening."
"It's amazing; today's youth finally have a voice, and that voice is Avril."
"But what surprises me even more is this song's music video. I've seen many impressive videos this year, like Lose Yourself and Without Me, each with its unique strengths and drawbacks, creatively expanding their songs. But Sk8er Boi is different—it's the only one this year that I feel deserves to be revisited more than the song itself."
"Honestly, I'm not that familiar with cinematic language—that's something for Hollywood critics to write about—but hey, it's a music video. I can only tell you with my limited knowledge that this video uses advanced camera work and an undeniable creativity. The blend of American comic style, stop-motion, and explosions is so artfully arranged that I was completely thrilled as I watched."
"I even think that because of this music video, the song's sales will reach an unimaginable height."
As for music critic Tony, he didn't hold back as usual: "Billboard number one! Mark my words, there's no doubt. And the MTV Video Music Award? This video's got that locked too, even against Without Me."
"To be honest, the song itself still has some of Avril's typical quirks. The arrangement could be stronger, especially during the chorus, where the melody repeats without elevating the song to the next level."
"But, surprisingly, the music video adds that extra layer. Yes, when you watch the music video while listening to the song, you can't help but feel pumped. If you turn off the video, well, then the song just feels relaxing, missing some of its intensity."
"So I have to give credit to director Ethan. His work has greatly boosted the song's reach and sales! Even I watched it five times, and I can't imagine how fans must be reacting. So even though Without Me has its merits—the song, its satire, and style—it's still a step behind Sk8er Boi."
Apart from these two critics, there were plenty of fans sharing their thoughts in the magazine as well.
"The first time I saw this video, I was stunned; I almost thought I was watching a movie! Really, when I found out it was a music video, I felt a shiver run from my toes to my scalp."
"I felt like I was watching an imaginative movie. The mix of comic elements with a realistic style was so well done, I even went looking for similar movies, but sadly, I couldn't find any. Oh well, guess I'll just watch the video again!"
"I absolutely love the scene in the video where fireworks explode around a skyscraper! It's perfect! The colors are exactly like something out of my dreams. I even took a photo and put it up in my room. I love Avril! I love Ethan, the director of this video!"
These comments, however, weren't the magazine's centerpiece, as they had a surprise reveal for readers. The previously anonymous critic was back, this time using her real name: Mariah Carey.
No one could believe it was her!
Mariah Carey, a Grammy regular, a World Music Awards winner for Best-Selling R&B Artist in 1998, and a singer who's considered on par with Whitney Houston. Known for her impressive vocal range and curves, her fans affectionately call her the "Queen."
It was a huge surprise that Nylon Music Magazine got her to review a song, and it made the issue fly off the shelves.
Even at the CAA building, in Brady's office, the VP who had been waiting for Ethan to flop was reading Mariah Carey's review of Sk8er Boi.
"As I said before, I like this girl, and I like the expression in her songs. This is exactly what young people are drawn to. She's infused rock with a new punk edge, which is why everyone loves this song so much."
"But more than the song, this music video is what grabs attention. I have it playing in my living room right now. It feels like watching a Hollywood blockbuster, and the creativity is astounding. I even looked up the director's name, and just like her first video, it's Ethan."
"But these two videos are completely different. It's truly a surprise. This is the best music video I've seen this year, and I'm sure it'll win something at the MTV Awards. Also, I have to say, I'd love for this director to work on my new album's video."
"As for when the album's coming out, well, that depends on when inspiration hits."
"Bang!" Brady tossed the magazine onto his desk, his face grim.
Sitting across from him, Noston looked equally serious, lips pursed and lacking his usual confidence.
"Look at that! Look at the video he directed. FXXK! Helicopters, exploding fireworks, comic book style… How could that record label give Ethan such a big budget!"
Noston glanced at the magazine images, shrugging. "Well, Avril has big hit potential, so it makes sense they'd invest more."
"But he should've been on my team!" Brady fumed. "It's all Edison's fault! He stole my talent! And Mike too, that fool!"
Noston didn't respond immediately, waiting until Brady calmed down a bit before saying, "There's still a chance. The MTV awards usually prioritize a video's depth. And while I agree Ethan's video is fantastic, the judges may not necessarily favor it over Joseph's."
Brady nodded. "But we can't just rely on the judges. I can't let Edison outshine me… absolutely not!"
Noston raised an eyebrow. "Don't worry; I've already made arrangements."
Meanwhile, thanks to all the magazine hype and fan recommendations, Avril's new song broke into the mainstream with ease.
Media outlets everywhere reported on the excitement surrounding the song.
"Avril's New Song Is Blowing Up! 75% of Record Stores Are Playing It!"
"Stunning Music Video Blows Fans Away. Who Is Director Ethan?"
"CAA Restructures Strategy, with Music Division Profits Reaching One-Third of Film Division's."
In record stores, reporters captured footage of customers lining up to buy Avril's album.
Crowds packed the stores, waving their wallets and asking to buy her single. Reporters investigated the sales figures, discovering that Sk8er Boi made up an impressive three-to-two ratio compared to other songs.
This means that out of ten people, six were buying this single.
It was an astounding figure, and a reporter shared the findings on camera.
"Avril's new song has sparked buying frenzies in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and more. It's sure to reach the top three on Billboard. Young people are voting with their money, showing what they truly want. Punk rock's attitude will undoubtedly become a popular trend. But whether Avril can hold her lead and win a Grammy next year depends on the judges."
And in this electric atmosphere, Billboard updated its charts.
Everyone saw Avril's Sk8er Boi dethrone Eminem's Without Me to debut at number one!
"Yahoo!" Carl cheered in the office, dancing with his cup of tea.
He couldn't contain his joy. With his mouth curling up in an uncontrollable grin, Carl felt as though he'd won the lottery.
For once, his usual worries and uncertainties disappeared, and all he wanted to do was watch Ethan's video ten more times and sip his favorite tea.
Just then, his desk phone rang.
"Ring!"
"Hello…"
"Yes, I'll be right there."
Carl tidied his suit and left the office, heading to the private elevator.
VP Edison wanted to see him. It was clear he'd proven his judgment and abilities, and a promotion and raise were definitely in his future.
From his office to the elevator, Carl received more attention than usual.
"Carl! Good afternoon!"
"Good afternoon to you!"
"Hey, Carl, looking sharp!"
"You too!"
"Carl, is that a new suit? That tie really suits you!"
"Indeed."
Carl cursed to himself, realizing he hadn't changed clothes in a week. If it weren't for Avril's breakout hit, who would've noticed a regular manager's outfit?
This behavior only proved that people are quick to flatter and look down on others. Ordinary Carl, thanks to a promising young music video director on his team, had suddenly become a rising star.
This damned superficiality and vanity!
But wasn't this exactly what he wanted?
