I had caught her staring at me; her perfect figure one I longed to see.
I wanted to see her again; to see her pretty face so close, and to get to know her more. I never knew the MacKennys had another daughter.
How come Nita never said a word?
Nita!
It seemed as though a call of her name got me remembering we were meeting up today.
"Sammy!"
She was calling-
Had she caught me staring?
I couldn't worry much about the thought as she threw herself on me.
"Hey... Nita," I greeted nervously as she raised her head, a frown appearing on her lips. "Baby-"
She smiled. "Love the sound!" her head came back on my chest.
Looking up slightly, I saw her sister no more.
Shit! Nita's presence must her made her move away, I thought so hard.
I was so lost in thought that I hadn't heard Nita. She called to my attention, and I looked down at her, realizing she had been talking all along.
"Babe?" she called again. "Are you all right?"
My brows arched up at her question. "Alright?"
She nodded and purred.
"You know, I've been thinking..."
I couldn't hear the rest as she went on.
"Babe? Babe!"
A holler of my name made me stop thinking. "Mm?" I looked down again. "Mm, I'm listening," I hoped she wouldn't stress further because I knew I wasn't listening at all.
All this time I was worried that she had seen Nita and I cuddling.
Wait. What's with the worry?
"Sam, are you really sure you're all right?"
I knew Anita was starting to suspect that something wasn't right.
She pulled away from me and rolled her eyes at me for a minute.
"What? I said I'm fine,"
"You look pretty stressed out to me," she observed.
I chuckled nervously. "Oh, come on, don't let it bother you."
I couldn't come up with anything better to say, so I went for that.
This is lame-
"Let's go?"
"Go where?"
"To Burger King?" her brows arched up again. "Thought you wanted..."
"Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah." I didn't let her finish.
She gave me a weird look, and got her arm under mine.
Dang it! Now my plan is ruined-I felt helpless knowing I had to wait another day before I could see her again.

I had grown sober at the thought of not being able to call out to him. I really wanted to know this guy, and why I felt so drawn to him.
I laid down, holding my pillow to my bosom, still thinking about him, as the door of my room came open and Mum walked in, clutching a tray.
"Here... you... go,"
The words, I could silently make out.
She placed the tray on my laps as I sat upright, kissed me lightly on my forehead, and turned to leave.
I felt really lonely,,even though I had Mum with me. I wanted to relate more with her, but just had to bear the thought of my life not getting any better.
I needed Anita by my side, but I knew it was never going to be possible getting her to stay with me. I missed my sister so much, and was dying to be with her. We used to be best friends when we were kids-but now-things were really different.
Different, I stopped to think.
Different! I yelled in my head, knowing I had just gotten the perfect title for a new song.

I got the tray off my laps, got my guitar in front of me, and brought out my songbook so I could get busy.
I put in thousands of words, not giving up, as evening came and it was time for us to go for a walk.
And by us, I mean "Mum and me".
Anita still wasn't back, and it was getting Mum really worried. It didn't stop us from taking our usual walk down the lane, though, and I could say I was having a really fun time enjoying the cool breeze, until a striking view came sending chills—
My sister... and the cute boy kissing?
My throat tightened with pain.
I could tell Mum was mad on seeing them, as she let go of my hand and made angrily towards them.
They were clearly arguing, with Mum's lips moving in a way you'd know she was disgusted by the sight. Nita's hand was still clutching the cute boy's, making me wonder if she wasn't scared of what Mum was going to do when we got home.
♡♡♡
"I thought you said Sammy was a friend?" asked Nita's Mum the minute the front door got closed.
"Well, he's more than that," Nita shrugged.
Nita hated how her mother went about the whole "no-boys" rules, when clearly she knew they were never going to be followed.
"Mum, can we not talk about this? It's not like we were having sex or anything!"
Mrs. MacKenny gasped. "Oh, it had better not get to that, Anita MacKenny!"
Nita scoffed. "Whatever, Mum. I'm going upstairs."
Mrs. MacKenny was dumbfounded watching her daughter leave.
Nita and Lucille's Dad came back not long after. The girls were surprised on seeing him get back home early, with Anita not so happy about the new change. She knew her mum was going to go straight off in telling her father all about she and Sammy-and just like she had thought—she did.
"I can't believe she ratted me out!" Nita grumbled up in her room.
"Nita?" Mr MacKenny called to his daughter's attention. "Nita!"
Nita answered nonchalantly, "No one's here,"
The door swung open at that minute revealing her old man.
"I can see you just right, grumpy," teased Mr MacKenny with a belly laugh.
"What do you want?" Nita folded her arms as she asked, eyes lowered in a bid not to meet his eyes.
Mr. MacKenny knew how naught his daughter could be, so he knew just how to handle her.
"Baby," he called. "I know that..."
"Know what?" Nita frowned. "In fact, can we not talk about this? Dad?"
Her Dad's full brows arched up. "Talk about what?" he pretended not to know what she was saying.
Nita knew he was only putting up an act so she wouldn't know why he was there, but there was no way she was falling for it. "Quit the act, Dad. I know Mum already told you."
Mr. MacKenny laughed. "Told me what?"
Nita groaned. "Dad, just quit it!"
Mr. MacKenny chuckled with his palms aimed in her direction. "All right, all right—" he stopped to know her expression, took a deep breath and began. "Now, I know you're angry with your Mum for telling me all about—" he stopped to think.
"Sammy?" Nita added.
"Is that his name?" he looked at her, and while snapping his fingers, yelled, "Yeah! That's his name." he affirmed with a grin.
"Well, I'm not," Nita shook her head though deep inside she was outraged with her mother not keeping any thing from her Dad—not surprising.
"Dad, don't tell me we're gonna talk about boys tonight?" Anita made to change the topic. "I mean, if you're gonna ground me, I'll understand-"
"Nita, it's not just about grounding you..."
She interrupted,"Then what is it?"
"You just don't understand!"
"What am I to understand, Dad?" Nita asked, confused.
"Nita..."
"Dad, you're acting as if I can't have anything to do with a boy. I mean, what's the matter with that? Ain't I old enough to be with whoever I wanna be with?"
"Nita, can you just listen to us?"
"Well, I'm listening." she uncrossed her legs. "Since you and Mum don't want me hanging with boys, I'm gonna go for girls instead!" she blurted out.
"Nita!"
"Dad, you can't just tell me how to live my life. Okay? Come on, I'm 16, not a kid!"
Mr. MacKenny chuckled with one brow raised. "Really?"
"Yes!" Anita affirmed. "And besides, he and I did nothing wrong."
"Well, that doesn't mean the time won't come," her Dad countered. "Baby, we're just trying to protect you..."
"From what?" she rebelled, getting to her feet. "I don't need protection if that's the reason."
Her father exhaled. "You really are not getting it, are you?"
She sat back down. "Mum just never gets me, father. You guys don't," she lowered her voice. "Mum's always paranoid, always yelling. And you, well, you're not always home to know." she sighed. "And even when you are, you only care about Lucy—and not me."
The sadness in her voice was so easy to tell, that her father could sense. "Nita, we care about you so much. Your Mum and I really do." her father tried to make her believe they really cared.
Anita raised her head, staring into his eyes, as though looking for something, and then asked, "Then why do I feel you don't?" she asked with hurt.
It felt as though her insides were going to burst, but shedding a tear wouldn't be a solution to her parents not neglecting her.
Mr MacKenny made to speak, and a soft tap came on the door, interrupting them. "Guess I'm not the only one who's been wanting to talk to you," he gave Anita a smile and kissed her forehead.
The door pushed open revealing Lucille; a cold look appearing on Nita's face, as Lucille stood completely still.
"Be nice, Nitty," Mr MacKenny cautioned and left the girls to talk.
Anita couldn't help but look disdainfully at her sister; one that could send a scaredy kitty off its feet. She rose to her feet the moment their dad left the room, and she gripped her sister's hair, pulling it roughly as she cursed and spat.
"You fool! How dare you show Mum where Sammy and I were? How dare you?!"
Nita knew it wasn't her fault, but it felt nice taking all the anger out on her...
Lucille MacKenny
I'd just been tortured by my own sister. I didn't know what a monster she was, until she shoved my head down the drain.
Mum and Dad had no idea what had happened between us.
My own sister—Anita.
Oh!
I wanted to tell them about what Anita did. How I wanted to tell Mum and Dad all about what she had done. but I couldn't bring myself to.
Sisters were supposed to be there for each other; to have each other's back—but I couldn't understand why it couldn't be for Anita and me.
Isn't being just dumb enough? Why do I have to pass through this, too? I sobbed bitterly until there was no tears left to cry.
I hated the life I was given. I couldn't wait for it to just end!
Mum and Dad were doing all that they could to make me feel better. But what's feeling better if you can't be with the one you dearly want to be with?
