Help the Hero, Don't Fall for the Villainess

The last thing Kai had expected when he had died, was to wake up in the world inside of a story he had read as a background character. And it wasn't just any story, it was the story that his sister had written before she had died. Determined to live this new life to the fullest, Kai grew and went on to become an employee at the male lead's company. Additionally, he was able to become the male lead's and female lead's friend. Caught up in the stableness and blissfulness of his life, Kai had forgotten that the plot of the story had yet to begin and was reminded when he stumbled upon a scene he shouldn't have seen involving the villainess. Deciding to make it easier for the story to finish completely and give his friends their happily ever after while at the same time wanting to get this problem off his shoulders, he teams up with the male lead to spy on the villainess, Valerie Ashton. His goal was to help the leads get their happily ever after, so why... was he finding the villainess attractive? Why was he hesitating in his plans to bring her and the villain down? Why was he finding that his sister's story had hidden so many things and was going against it? Could Kai change the story in order to give everyone a happy ending, including his with Valerie?

A painful pounding ache on his head woke Kai up from his sleep. With a groan, he pushed himself up from the bed to sit up. He brought his hand up to massage his head and glanced at the clock that was on the nightstand. It was a quarter past one in the morning.

Kai got up from the bed carefully, making sure that he wouldn't wake up his girlfriend from her sleep and to not cause himself to get a bout of dizziness if he were to move too quickly.

Slowly, he made his way to the kitchen and poured himself a cup of water. Opening the cabinet where he kept medication and pills, he popped a pill out and shoved it into his mouth. Bringing the cup to his lips, he tilted his head back and gulped it down. After drinking, he set the cup down and went out of the kitchen to the living room where he went to sit on the couch.

Leaning back, he closed his eyes and decided to stay there for a while, at least until the headache lessened. With how busy he had been these past few weeks and how much sleep he had missed out on, Kai didn't realize when he fell asleep. As if he had blinked, he opened his eyes to realize that more than an hour had passed with him sleeping on the couch; the clock on the wall showed that it was two-thirty. With his head feeling much better, Kai got up and decided to return to bed.

Just when he had taken the first step in the direction to his room, he heard something. Quiet, but he heard it. Not hearing anything for the next few seconds, Kai decided to ignore it and walked to his room. After having closed the door and walked to his bed, he heard something, again. And it came from outside the building.

Going to stand in front of the window that was covered by a dark curtain, he hesitated before moving to the side and carefully lifted the curtain a little.

Peeking through the gap, he saw that there was nothing out of the ordinary happening. The park which was surrounded by trees looked normal, the streetlights were bright and on– Then Kai noticed a familiar-looking car hiding in the shadows across from where he lived and across the park. He felt goosebumps rise on his skin and he held his breath. The figure of a woman could be faintly seen standing next to the car and he felt as if his heart fell to the ground.

What was she still doing here?!

Then, all of a sudden, the streetlights went out and the whole area outside turned dark. Kai couldn't see what was happening but he had a feeling that whatever he had seen earlier was related to what was going on. A few moments later, he saw the lights outside had come back on and two people were standing outside next to the car. He saw as the taller person opened the door for the woman but the woman didn't get in. Instead, Kai saw how she tilted her head up a little, and he swore that she was looking in his direction.

Alarmed, Kai let go of the curtain he had been holding and finally let out the breath he had been holding. With his shaky hands, that he was not aware of since he was too shocked to pay attention to his trembling body, he lifted the curtain a little once more, only to see that the car and the people he had seen were gone.

Sighing with relief, he quickly went to bury himself into his bed and tried to get back to sleep. But sleep didn't come easy to him as he realized that he might've just put a target on his back due to his idiotic decision earlier that day.

The next day, Kai saw the news which reported that two people were found dead in Riverside Park. Cause of death– suicide.

But Kai knew. He knew who had been responsible for those deaths. But he kept his mouth shut, lest he become the next person on that woman's list.
