“If you run, you’ll suck more pollutants and poison into your lungs,” he said sternly. With the loss of his air filters in the blast, he wasn’t sure how much poison he had inhaled. Or how much Chip had already breathed in after so long without the benefit of air filters.

And yet Chip and Beth seemed to have survived with no air filters without any obvious ill effects,Dakota wondered. Perhaps I was being too cautious? The atmosphere north of Dallas is much clearer even though it still smells. I guess it’s okay to breathe?

“I know where we might find shelter from the open,” Chip protested.

“How far?”

Chip glanced forward and then behind them in the gathering gloom. “I’m certain it’s just over a mile from here.”

“Fine, but keep a steady pace and no running. And breathe through your nose.”

“Yes, sir.” Chip gave him a peck on the lips and took off. Dakota fell in behind him, donning his night-vision goggles.
