When I’d told my mother that Chris and I were seeing each other again, she was happy to hear the news, but also worried. “You didn’t tell him about Alex, did you?”
“No…not yet, but I feel like I shouldtell him…eventually.”
“No one, not even the person you love, has to know all your secrets, Scott. Take it from someone who knows.”
“You kept secrets from Dad?”
“Oh, God, yes. I never told your father every single thing about myself. Not that I had much to hide, but there were a few things I felt he didn’t need to know.”
When I asked for a specific example, she refused to give one. I guess she figured whatever secrets she kept from my father would also be kept from me. Maybe my mother was right. Maybe I didn’t need to share every secret with Chris. Maybe some things werebetter left unsaid.
“Mom, I need you to keep quiet about Alex, too. If Chris learns what happened, that news needs to come from me, not you.”
