Chapter 9

Kayden's POV

This last week has been hell. My Beta, Ezra, found his mate at the worst possible time. And now has no way to find him, he broke things off with his girl friend immediately after. I tried to tell him dating her was a bad idea, but he didn't listen and now he's paying the price. He has been moping around and complaining all week.

To make the week worse, I learned my mate is near as well. Unfortunately, her scent has been on Lucas every day this past week. That can only mean he has been in close contact with her. At first, I was confused and then I was angry, he is getting to spend time with my mate. I hope I'll meet her soon.

I get up and get ready for school, then I go to Ezra's room to drag him out of bed. He fights me about going to school now since all it does is remind him of the place he found and lost his mate.

"Ezra, get up and ready now. You have 10 minutes to be downstairs."

"I'm not going today!"

"You are, if you stay here, I'm going to make you do patrol all day."

"Ugh, fine."

He gets out of bed and stomps around his room like a 5-year-old. I roll my eyes and leave his room to get food. Ezra comes down with a minute to spear.

"Happy?" I nod my head. "Good lets go."

He goes to the car and slams the door behind him. I sigh knowing it's going to be another long day at school with him. I've basically become his babysitter.

I get into the driver seat and drive us to school. We go in and get our books from our lockers. As I'm closing my locker my mates scent hits me, but it's not dulled like when Lucas is nearby. Her scent is very strong this time.

'Our mate is finally here!'

I quickly take off, following her scent.

"Where are you going!?" Ezra shouts.

I ignore him and keep following the scent, it leads me to the front of the school. Just inside the doors is a boy and girl I haven't seen before. As soon as I meet the girls' eyes, I know she's mine.

"Lani what's wrong?" the boy asks.

"Mate." Is her only response.

The boy looks at me in shock. Lani starts walking towards me and when she's within arm's reach I pull her to me. She lets out a breath as soon as she's in my arms.

She looks into my eyes, "What's your name?"

"I'm Alpha Kayden of the Crescent Pack."

Lani whispers a no and the boy she came here with takes in a breath before walking over to us. He puts his arm on her shoulder and she turns to look at him. I don't understand what's going on but stay silent.

"It's ok, I'll be fine."

"Are you sure?"

He nods his head. "This is how mates are supposed to meet."

Her eyes fill with tears as she nods. "I'll always be here for you. If you need me, I'll stay with you."

"You're my little sister, I want you to be happy."

She pulls out of my arms to hug her brother.

"Thank you, Nohea."

"ʻo ʻoe nō koʻu ʻohana" he says.

(You'll always be my family)

I watch him go ridged before pulling away from my mate. He's looking at some one behind me, I turn around to see Ezra. He looks shocked but also has tears in his eyes.

"At least now I know your name."

I watch my mate get in a defensive position in front of her brother.

"Nohea?" she asks.

As I watch the exchange all the parts of the conversation Lani and Nohea had start to make sense. Nohea is Ezra's mate. My mate was willing to stay away from me because she knew Ezra is my Beta. I could have lost my mate because of my Beta. At the realization of this my wolf and I get angry.

Before anything else could be said or done the doors open again. This time Alpha Lucas and his Beta Caleb come in.

"What's going on here?" Lucas asks.

Lani shares a look with Nohea, and he gives her a nod. She comes back over to me and stands in front of me, I immediately wrap my arms around her waist. I notice Nohea walk behind me as well and stands next to Ezra.

"I found my mate." Lani states.

"What! Him?" Lucas shouts while pointing at me.

"Yes." I answer.

"Lani, please don't do this. You know how I feel – "

"And so do you! I told you yesterday, I will always choose my mate!" Lani shouts at him.

"Then I have a promise to keep."

Lucas starts walking closer to us. I try to pull Lani behind me, but she stands her ground. Then Nohea comes to stand with her, they're trying to protect me. But why? What promise did he make to Lani that they would need to protect me?

"You do this Lucas and it'll kill me."

"No, it won't, you'll be given a second chance mate."

With just that sentence I realize Alpha Lucas plans to try and fight me. Even so, we would be fighting over my mate. And that is a fight I will not lose.

I go around my mate. "If you want a fight, then you'll get one."

We meet in the middle; Lucas throws a punch at my face, and I block it. I throw a series of punches, one to his stomach, ribs and face. Next, I kick his legs out from under him before straddling him. I get two punches into his face before he rolls us over and lands a few punches on me.

After rolling us over again, I go to throw another punch. Before I can, Lucas's Beta, Caleb, pulls me off of him. Lucas gets up and before we can go towards each other again our Betas' stop us. Lani runs in between us, stopping either of us from starting another fight.

I look around us and see most of the school and teachers standing around watching us. I look back at my mate, but she isn't looking at me, she's looking at Lucas.
