The accident that had occurred in broad daylight on the main road sent Eteare into an uproar. The culprit was Donnan, House Bale's private guard. He barely escaped with his life and was immediately put under city watch investigation. Donnan claimed that the accident was due to Mathis falling asleep at the wheel, but numerous witness accounts refuted his statement. The owner of the cafe near the intersection testified that Mathis was driving very slowly right before the accident, trying to find a place to park.
Donnan then changed his whole testimony.
'It was all planned by me.'
He took the blame for the accident and everything else—the anarchists' break-in at the Bale townhouse, the exchange of diamonds, the framing of Camellius Bale. He asserted that he had caused the accident because he was afraid of his crime being uncovered.
It was a lie.
Donnan's testimonies had a glaring lack of reason or motive, but he preserved his silence by hiring a lawyer.
