“Macaroni and cheese it is, and vegetables with lemon sauce like you get in the Chinese restaurants. You have chicken in there, too. I should cook it before it goes bad, right? How about baked with Italian breadcrumbs? I’ll freeze half of it after it’s cooked.”

She kissed his hand. “You’re so good to me. I’d marry you if I had the chance.”

“Shall we have a big or small wedding? What about a cruise to Alaska for the honeymoon? Do you want more kids?”

She pulled him close, kissing his cheek. “You’re a sweet boy. I wish the best for you and Jim. You fit well and will have a good life together.” She had a coughing fit. Jim got her water, and after she sipped, she said, “If it’s not too much trouble, two loaves of quick bread would be good. I’ll freeze one along with some of the chicken.”

Brian jumped to his feet and bowed. “Yes, M’Lady. Your wish is my command. Are we officially engaged then?” Brian locked his gaze with Jim.
