Chapter 6 - How get rid of your unwanted guests

As we were about to descend into the tunnels, the voices of two men echoed, stopping us in our tracks.

"No caravan will be coming through these ruins anyway, so what are we even doing here?"

"The caravans will not come through here, that's true, however, it would be easier for us to use this place as a forward base to harass the caravans and at the same time the NCR."

"That makes sense, but what if these ass-kissers came back to retake their farms?"

"We'll simply kill them. Fucking NCR lovers deserve to be slaves to our legion."

Hearing the conversation the two men were having, James turned to us and with a complicated look on his face, he decided to ask us the million caps question.

"I know that the mission was to get rid of mole rats, but sadly for us, it seems that the legion had its hands in this sudden migration. Are you two willing to help us get these bastards out of our home, once and for all?"

Vito and I shared a look before he shrugged his shoulders telling me that it was my choice if I didn't want to follow them down there. Truth be told, this would be the first time I would be forced to kill another human being. Not even Dr. Samuel or his assistants forced me to kill the raiders, super mutants, or the ghouls as it would be a waste to lose a test subject, instead, they let me beat them up or spar with the green boys until either one of us was too tired to continue or injured quite badly.

While I would have loved to have more time to decide, the sad truth was that there wasn't exactly enough time for me to make a logical choice, so instead of succumbing to my fears, I decided to face the harsh reality and have my first ever life-threatening fight.

Nodding at James, he showed me a sad smile before he signaled us to follow him down in the tunnels. Unfortunately, for us, I hadn't been paying attention while I was walking and ended up stamping on something that broke under my foot. Looking down horrified at what I could have possibly stepped on, I saw the crushed body of a small ugly creature that I think was resting near the stairs. Lily quickly came next to me and looks over to see why I stopped before her eyes went wide open in fear and shock.

"Oh my god, mole rats babies! Get your guns out, we're about to have to face the whole colony."

As soon as Lily whispered and shouted at us, from all around us, through walls surrounding our position, the older and way bigger mole rats were moving quickly towards us, no doubt to avenge their now dead baby.

A second later, a growl made me react instinctively and a gunshot was heard. The next thing that I saw was the dead body of the rat hitting the ground as more and more of its kin were advancing angrily toward us.

For some reason I didn't feel sick as I thought I would feel, then again the amount of adrenaline pumping into my body was probably the reason I could react that fast, at least I hope so. While I was distracted by those thoughts, another mole rat ran up and was about to bite my arm. Sadly no matter how much adrenaline was in my body, I couldn't turn in time to dodge or kill the mole rat, so I choose the second best option: Letting the mole rat bite my arm and hope for the best.

The mutated rat bites through my thin layer of clothing right into my flesh, making me flinch in pain. However, rather than succumbing to the pain and giving the creature more than enough time to bite me again, I swung my pistol at it, sending it to the ground before unloading three bullets into it. With the second and hopefully the last rat I had to face death, I turned to look at my companions only to realize that Lily and James were already engaging the legionnaires while Vito was still fighting against a few rats that managed to pop up from under the stairs, trapping them in there. Since I had only a few bullets left and there was no way my broken-ass pistol would be able to even harm the legionnaires from such a distance, I decided to help my friend first and foremost before we would turn and deal with the legion together.

I turned to face Vito, only to see him bashing the mole rats with the back of his gun, preserving his ammunition for bigger and probably more dangerous targets than some mutated rats.

"Need a hand?"

"Do you think you can kill those things with your small gun? I count at least seven of them remaining and I doubt you have that many bullets to kill them all. Go and help the couple, they need you more than I do, besides, as I said earlier, you won't be helpful here."

He was right, at least to some extent. Since I didn't want to argue about something so pointless like this, I decided to turn my attention to the still-alive legionnaires that were slowly, but surely making their way toward us. Taking cover beside James, I saw him nodding at me before handing me an extra magazine, and blind firing at the enemies. Before I joined the fight, I glanced at Lily only to see her suppressed by a surprising amount of small firearms. Rather than simply blind firing like James, I peek a little from down to the left of my cover, just enough to see the faint silhouettes of those men.

Just as one of them spotted, a bullet penetrated his skull killing the man, before he could warn his friends. My first real human kill and yet, I still didn't feel anything. Nevertheless, I continue to pick a few more targets before the legionnaires retreat in a hurry leaving their wounded and dead friends behind alongside all of their weapons.

When the last legionnaire disappeared in the darkness of the tunnels, all three of us took a deep breath of air. Even though we didn't completely remove the threat, the three of us plus my green friend with a deep hatred against those poor rats did recover the underground farms. At the same time, we disrupted whatever plans the Legion had this far away from their territory. The only problem remaining was how these idiots sneaked past the Mojave Outpost and reached this destroyed small village.
