In the aftermath, those mermaids who had slaughtered the villagers fled. Anastasia and Cassius decided to stay three more days just in case Nerina came for another attack. She walked through the streets of Raven as survivors who had hidden in fear now emerged from their homes. They ran over to the bodies, wailing over the still-bleeding corpses. The mermaids had rushed into homes, killing women, men, and children.
"Are you okay?" Aeris asked.
She nodded. "I should help the wounded."
"Your Highness," the magistrate said, bowing his head. "We are happy to have you here. It is devastating what happened today."
"How many dead?" she asked.
"Close to a hundred," the magistrate replied.
"They will have to be burned," she said.
"If it is alright, we can arrange a place for you to stay as long as you want," the magistrate said.
