Durable Empowered Series

“Keith and I watched in awe and joy as the inexplicable happened. Nikki was alive! My mate was back! Then suddenly, those brown eyes I loved so much started morphing. Her right eye lightened and became as golden as mine after I shifted into my wolf. While her left eye deepened and became black before turning blood red like Keith’s right before he feeds. It was unfeasible but there she laid a vampire-werewolf hybrid.” Nicolette Winspere always felt out of step with the world around her and for good reasons. She is a genetically engineered vampire-werewolf hybrid but she has no idea! Created as the ultimate weapon, Nicolette is a timid African American woman caught in the middle of a deadly war between humans and non-humans. The humans want her to destroy their natural enemies the vampires and werewolves; while her creator wants to use her to avenge an over 2 millennia-year old slight. After narrowly escaping the clutches of her “parents”, she begins a new life with no intentions of looking back. However, after 5 years of freedom, her hybrid genes start attacking her human ones forcing her to do the one thing she swore never to do…return to where it all began. Upon her arrival home, Nicolette finds herself in a desperate fight to keep her life, her freedom, and her humanity all while dealing with the unexpected re-appearance of an old flame. Truths will come to light, the inexplicable will happen, and monsters will be birthed!

Couldn't Possibly Be True, Right?!

For a brief moment, my mind railed against going back to my parents; but what choice did I have? A few more episodes like the one earlier and my eardrums would really be blown out. I needed their help and hopefully enough time had passed that they wouldn't still be pissed off at me.

With my mind made up, I sat up and called out to Tianna. Heated whispers followed before Tianna answered, "In the kitchen."

A frown marred my face as I walked towards the kitchen and the source of the whispers. As soon as I walked in, I wished I hadn't. Standing across from Tianna, looking like he just walked off of an Ebony magazine cover was the man I had blown off yesterday, Josiah.

"I-What are you doing here, Siah? And why did you let him in?" As frustrated and angry as I was at the sight before me I couldn't summon enough energy to put much emotion in my voice.

"I didn't let him in. I wouldn't!" T swore vehemently; shooting Josiah a disdainful look. "He just burst through the door when you started screaming."

Josiah straightened up and strode towards me a look of concern and desire swirling in his eyes. "She is telling the truth. She didn't let me in. In fact, she has tried her best to get me to leave for the last hour; but I refused. Not until I saw for myself that you are awake and okay."

Nodding in understanding, I backed up a few steps refusing to let him crowd or touch me. "Okay." I gestured to myself, "I am fine. Thank you for stopping by. Please leave, now." I knew I was being a bitch but the intense look in his eyes was triggering a well of feelings, I didn't want, in the pit of my stomach. Averting my eyes, I stepped to the side and pointed at the door.

"I can't. We need to talk." He had barely uttered the words before I was shaking my head. There was just no way. Not only did I not want to talk to him, I didn't have the time.

"There can't possibly be anything that we need to talk about. I think you said everything you needed to, three years ago.

Plus this is honestly the worst time for you to want to rehash things. I have a lot of problems I need to deal with."

In the blink of an eye, he was standing in front of me. His cat- orange eyes stared down into mine tugging free all the emotions I had been trying to press down and I started to cry. "I know, love" his voice had roughened, and he pulled me into a hug.

I wrapped my hands around his waist and buried my face in his chest. I had missed him! The pleasant spicy smell of him that was mixed with tangerines. Most of all, I missed the strength that filled me every time he was around.

I don't know how much time passed but I was finally able to think clearly so I pulled out of his embrace and looked down. I caught the flash of hurt in his eyes at my actions but I needed to put some distance between us.

I was getting ready to ask him to leave again when he spoke, "I know about the unexplained changes you've been experiencing lately." Silence followed as I whipped my head up and stared at him in shock.

"What did you just say? H-How do you know about that?!"

Alarmed at the revelation, I took a step back only for him to re-close the gap, boxing me in between the fridge and his towering body of steel. Dismay coursed through me. "No, no! I said NO!" With a powerful surge, I pushed him back and ran towards Tianna.

Putting myself between them, I glared at him as my suspicions began to rise. "How do you know about me, better yet, how do you even know where I live?! I moved after the last time purposefully."

As I watched, his eyes began to glow and dissolve into slits just like the ones in those nightmares. Unease and familiarity rippled through me prodding something deep within to respond. Out of nowhere, a growl erupted in the room causing the hairs on my arms to stand up. Where did that inhuman sound come from? I was poised to run, and drag Tianna with me, so I almost missed Josiah's nod of approval.

"That's exactly what I thought," he said, stopping me in my tracks. "You're human but you are also a werewolf."

That was when I figured it out. That growl had come from me!
