As I cooled my aching hand against the can, I couldn't help but grumble, "She really didn't have to freeze my hand solid. That's just overkill."

Just then, a familiar voice called out. "Well, well. If it isn't the Iron Ball himself."

I turned to see Tsubasa Hououin approaching with a smug grin.

"What do you want, Hououin?"

He struck a theatrical pose. "Fate has brought us together, Akatani! We are destined to compete!"

I groaned. "Look, I don't have time for your nonsense. I've got a test to take."

"Perfect! Compete with me in today's D-Level exam. Let's see who can slay the most monsters!"

I stared at him. "And what's the prize?"

"Glory—and the title of 'Black Fang.'"

"No thanks."

But as fate would have it, I soon found myself without a party—and with no choice but to team up with Hououin and his eccentric crew.

The D-Level exam was going to be… interesting.
