The illumination in the underground chamber dimmed, casting long, menacing shadows from a corner of the room. The magic carriers, all clad in black jackets, stood resolute, unmoving. A heavy, rhythmic thud reverberated through the ground.
Bang… bang…
The female scientist lost her balance and sprawled on the cold concrete floor. She gasped, pain radiating from her disfigured eye, terror gripping her as the towering shadow approached. Her breath came in ragged bursts, and she frantically dragged herself backward across the floor. She whimpered, "N-no… I-I need to get out of here. I have to…" Suddenly, a leg blocked her escape, and she glanced back.
It was one of the carriers, his face obscured by the darkness of his hood.
"This is the purpose for which we were created," the carrier intoned mechanically. "Rise and let the energy within you be absorbed."
