“Not yet.” He strode forward, pushing Derek out of his way before the other man could put up a protest. When he grabbed Emma’s arm, she cried out, but it was lost in the hot influx of panic and fear exploding from her pores. “I thought you said your walls were up,” he accused.

She tried to yank away, but Gideon only tightened his grip. “They are. Gideon, let me go. You’re hurting me.”

Jesse grunted, drawing a flash of Gideon’s attention—but it was enough to see that Jesse looked ill, his face contorted. He closed the distance between them and pulled at Gideon’s other arm with surprisingly strong fingers. “Let her go. Or I’ll stake you myself.”

“You can’t feel that?” The emotions rolled through him. “She lied to you, boy. Any protection she might have had up isn’t there.”

“I can feel it,” Jesse whispered. His voice weakened. “Emma?”
