Gideon lowered him to the floor, and Jesse moved to the closet as soon as his legs felt like cooperating. It might have been the wrong time to get fucked within an inch of his life. But despite his physical exhaustion, for the first time since the power went out, Jesse wasn’t afraid of what might be lurking in the dark.15

Emma couldn’t concentrate. Michelle kept bustling around, efficient and grim, and John focused on the makeshift ingredients they’d managed to find for him, but Emma couldn’t keep her mind on what they were doing. Her thoughts kept straying back to the library, to Gideon’s hungry gaze, to the prick of his fangs, the flood of emotions that had washed from both him and Jesse. He hadn’t wanted to let them go; every time she closed her eyes, she saw the barely concealed frustration in his dark eyes. If Jesse had given any hints at all in yielding to Gideon’s desires, she was sure Gideon would have taken the opportunity and run with it.
