“If Gideon really did what you said he did, do you think he’s the one responsible for the lights going out, too?”
“No. The doors slammed, too. Didn’t you hear them? He couldn’t have been responsible for that. Besides, Gideon…he doesn’t need the dark to hunt people.”
“What’s going on?” Michelle demanded. From the edge in her tone, Jesse thought she must have heard at least half of his response.
“Gideon…he’s feeding on people. His first victim was Rita.”
“What?”
Jesse swallowed. “Gideon is hunting.”
“Then we’ll have to kill him.” The words were calm, but the fire in Michelle’s eyes did not come from the candles.
“No.”
Michelle’s face hardened and Jesse felt approximately three feet tall. “I have tolerated that monster in my city for the past century. That is a century too long, Jesse. He’s murdered an innocent woman. Even you can’t defend that.”
