“Go for it. I’m sure Mike and I can find lots to talk about.” Randy was quick to reply, and Mike just nodded in agreement.

I discreetly grabbed a six-pack of beer and ushered Brett out the door. When we got to the parking lot Brett turned to look at me, eyebrows raised in question.

“Randy likes my best friend. I know Mike well enough to see that he feels the same way. So mix, shake, and let settle. We’ll watch to see what comes of that experiment. As for you, Mr. Edmond, you wanted to see the cap on my mushroom stem. This could be as good a time as any, don’t you think?”

Brett kept within the speed limit, but maybe just barely. When we got to his house, he got out of the car, ran around to open my door, and took me by the arm. He led me to his front door. “Should I carry you over the threshold?”

“Are you nuts? And risk me dropping the beer? Besides, I’m bigger, stronger, more toned, and better looking than you. I should be doing the carrying.”
