DEATH'S OWN

Born with an unusual birthmark, the shape of a skeleton’s head with rose patterns round about it on her neck, many believed she would only bring bad luck to those around her. This belief was solidified when two of her suitors died unexpectedly right after a visit to her home. Such a thing should come as a bother to any woman but the same could not be said about Nyx. She didn't care if the beliefs about her were true or false. She never liked any of her suitors. Her heart had always been longing for a certain man whom she was very familiar with in her childhood but ceased to appear before her the moment she entered adolescence. Since she knew him one thing was very certain about him, he was not human since he never aged. Not even once. Believing he would one day come again, Nyx was prepared to wait until the day they would meet again. But not everything goes as planned. Having a sickly mother whose only wish was to see her daughter get married and an influential suitor who didn't mind the deaths around her, Nyx soon found herself married off and her mother passed away leaving a father who dreaded her existence and a husband she never loved. **** From a distance he watched her grow, keeping his distance from her, staying within the shadows. As she aged slowly into adulthood, the mark on her neck became more prominent and so was her scent. He wanted her to grow, but when she finally came of age, he thought she would be better without him. But as time wore on and other men began to show interest in her, he could not hold back nor could he let them have her. He discarded those who had an interest in her but one of them slipped through his fingers while he was away and took her. He waited to see if she was happy with her life, with that man, if she was, then he would let her be. She would be able to live a happy life this time unlike the previous one, but everything changed when the forces from the underworld learned of her existence and her connection with him. Her husband was killed which he permitted and her life was in constant danger. Keeping the distance was no longer an option and he once again appeared before her.

An unexpected Visitor

"Do not lust for me, Nyx," Lyra said, and Nyx frowned, and she laughed. "It is obvious from the way you look at me. I am surprised you are still able to sit still." She walked to the desk and pulled a seat. She sat down and crossed her legs. "The woman waiting outside was so entranced that she would have lost her mind had I used even a slight bit of force on her."

Nyx frowned when she heard that. It meant Mia was useless as it is now, and she was alone as she doubted anyone would be able to fight against the woman's charms.

"What did you do to my assistant?" Nyx's tone was cold, but Lyra just smiled and cocked a brow.

"Nothing," she said with an offended expression that would have anyone pitying her and accusing Nyx of bullying a harmless woman. "I didn't do anything to you, yet you were gawking at me."

"Who are you, and why are you here?" Nyx asked. She didn't care how she sounded. All she knew was that this woman needed to leave but not before she got a little bit of information from her. Her name should be enough for her to ask Reaper and know more about this Lyra woman.

"You are bold, I will give you that much," Lyra clicked her tongue. She looked at Nyx, and her eyes glazed over. She hoped to see a shocked expression from Nyx, but she didn't get what she wanted and clicked her tongue again.

"A devil then?" Nyx said in a tone that she already expected that outcome. "Now why are you here?" Nyx could feel.it that this one was different from the previous woman who came to kill her. This Lyra was much more dangerous.

"To kill you," she said very bluntly and nonchalantly that anyone would have doubted their hearing ability, but Nyx knew she meant it and she could do it.

"A thing like you once came to kill me, but it ended up dying instead. Do you still want to try your luck?" Nyx asked and smirked when she saw the irritated look in Lyra's expression. She stood, and Nyx did the same. "I don't care what your purpose of coming here is, nor do I care about your drive to kill me, but I will not go down without a fight. I also believe you know the consequences of killing me, right?"

Lyra looked at the human before her. Now that she was standing, her body was in full view. It wasn't only her face that was attractive. Her outward appearance wasn't bad either. The black knee-length dress did justice to her figure as it accentuated her curves. But… At the end of the day, she was still just a human. She shouldn't lose her composure because of a human.

"You think he cares that much about what he would actually make do of his threat?" Lyra raised a brow and folded her arms. "He wouldn't give a f*ck whether you live or die human. They were one before you, now she is dead. He claimed her soul the same way he would claim yours the moment I kill you."

Nyx chuckled when she heard that.

"Since you know there was another human before, what happened that he looked beyond you and chose her, and now, he chose me over you?" She taunted, and Lyra hissed at her like a serpent, baring its fangs. "So, it is true that you are not good enough for him."

"You little…" she roared but got cut off by Nyx. She even raised her hand to strike Nyx, but it stopped before making contact with Nyx after hearing her words.

"Why don't you try killing me, and you'll know if he would truly actualize his threats? It would probably be too late to learn if that happens now, wouldn't it?" Out of anger and frustration, Lyra struck the desk, and it shattered. Nyx was quick to step back and avoid the falling pieces of the table.

"YouTube b*tch," she seathed.

"You believe me then," Nyx smiled, tapped on her chin, and then nodded her head. "It is good to know that you aren't dumb."

Lyra laughed, ran a hand through her hair, and sighed. She stepped over the rubble and came to stand before Nyx, and their eyes locked. They held each other in a silent starr until someone knocked on the door.

"You might have won this time human, but when I am certain that Death wouldn't give a f*ck about yoi when you die, I will be back to snap the strings of your life."

"You know, a moment, I was asked to see your span," Nyx stated, and Lyra frowned. "I couldn't do that with demons or devils or spirits or whatever you call yourselves. Not unless it is their time to die."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Lyra almost took a step back when she looked into Nyx's eyes and didn't see any lies in them.

"It means that if you had touched me, you would have died instead of me," Nyx replied and smiled at the woman. "If your mission here is done and over, leave, I have work to do. But before you go, fix my desk and computer. I won't spend money for something you destroyed when I know it wouldn't take more than a flick of your finger to have it fixed."

"You…"

"Well…? What are you waiting for? Someone's behind that door. Fix your mess," Nyx ordered as though she was talking to a child.

Lyra glared sharply at her, but in the end, she still fixed the broken table and computer as well as everything else that was on it. She stomped her way to the door and held the door handle. She then turned and gave one last glare at Nyx before she opened the door and nearly knocked down Mia on her way out.

"Miss Anders, are you alright? I heard some noise in here, and I thought…" She trailed off when Nyx smiled and returned to her seat.

"You have nothing to worry about, Mia, I am fine," Nyx replied, and the assistant smiled.
