For the next two minutes, Constantine indulged himself in describing the start of his one-night affair with Morpheus. Still, most of the words were manually muted out by Shiller. Constantine continued: "But, just as we were about to...ehm...some troubles came up."
"You know I've got friends everywhere, in Heaven and Hell included. Some of them, with too much gusto and impatience, can't wait a moment when they need me..."
"I was getting on with Morpheus really well, until this killjoy decided to show up. He was too urgent, so I had to wake up to deal with him..."
With a look of helplessness, Constantine said: "You know how rude it is to abruptly leave at such a critical moment, right? Can't believe I abandoned such a beautiful and passionate lover, dear God..."
Shiller glanced at his watch and said: "It's been ten minutes, and you still haven't got to the point."
"Just about to..." Constantine took another drag and said: "Sometime ago...I forgot how many days ago, the Dreammaker I had previously partnered with suddenly told me he was going on a long journey. He was going to stay in the Kingdom of Dreams for a few days and asked me to look after his body."
"As his friend, I couldn't refuse. But I still asked him what he was going to do. He told me some lunatic had messed up the With Dreamland of the dream god, and as a believer, he had to clean up the mess."
"He said the dream god told him about a 'professor' who had made a kind of 'mad liquor' that could pull people's consciousness into the dream space. He pulled a lunatic's consciousness into his dream like this and let him dig until he entered the Kingdom of Dreams, causing all sorts of havoc there."
"I was quite interested in this because my last date with that dream god was interrupted halfway, which was a great pity. It always remained in my heart, making me sleepless."
"I had always prayed in my dreams that the beautiful dream god would appear again and meet me. Still, he never came. And as a mere mortal, I had no way to enter the Kingdom of Dreams on my own."
"After hearing about this 'professor' who had created a liquor that could immerse people into the Kingdom of Dreams, I, of course, wanted to get hold of this magical mad liquor…".
"I heard from the Dreammaker that the gateway the lunatic used to enter was located in Gotham. So, I decided to come here for a spin. But I was not a local in Gotham and couldn't just be so presumptuous. Hence, I contacted a colleague of mine, Lorena Sanchez…"
"All the parts about her are true. She's a Ghost Mom who specializes in using children's souls for cultivation. Mob Boss Cooper hired her to resurrect his son, paying her a large sum of money and appointing her the principal of a boarding school."
"Everyone in the circle knows that resurrection is nonsense and Lorena simply wanted to swindle the money."
"But she was aware that she couldn't sustain the lie forever. She set a series of difficult conditions, but Cooper met all of them. She demanded an astronomical remuneration, but Cooper paid it."
"In the end, Lorena grew afraid that she might not emerge unscathed from this sham. After all, Cooper, one of Gotham's most notorious mob bosses, was rich, powerful, and ruthless."
"That's when I contacted her. Lorena saw me as a savior because she knew I had good relations with the demons in Hell. She offered me certain favours if I could help her retrieve a soul from Hell."
"I agreed, but only if she helped me investigate a man called 'Professor' in Gotham, providing me with his full history and data."
"Having been in Gotham for a long time, Lorena had dealt with these mob bosses and quickly informed me that the godfather's son's tutor was a psychology professor from Gotham University. This professor, known for his incredible history, might be the one I was looking for…"
"Yes, I've seen your history, Professor Shiller, and I don't intend to confront you directly due to some astonishing information in your background. You should know, I'm a peace-loving person, just here to steal something, not to kill…"
"So, I planned to draw you out and then search your mansion."
"And then?" Gordon suddenly had a bad feeling and asked Constantine, "You're not saying you…"
"Seeing in Professor Shiller's history that he has a keen interest in investigating serial murders, I thought, if I orchestrated a string of killings, he would investigate. The crime scene analysis would take at least a few hours, giving me enough time to turn his mansion inside out."
"But I also knew that if a minor character dies, the police might not come. So I chose a head from the Twelve Families, a man called Lawrence."
"I haven't done this before, but I've read those reports on serial killers and knew what they like to do, so I tried to imitate them as much as possible…"
As the story went, the walls of the mental hospital started to expand. An extra room appeared on the right side of the room, and a bed fell from the sky. On it was none other than Lawrence, with another Constantine standing from his chair and moving towards the bed.
