"Peter, could you help me deliver something in a bit?" Shiller asked Peter in the lab at Stark Building.
"Sure, Doctor, no problem. Where do you want it delivered?"
"First to Brooklyn Bridge, then to Chinatown, Greenwich Village, Time Square, the Statue of Liberty..."
"Wait a minute, why are there so many places? This sounds like a tour route? And what am I supposed to be delivering? Why are these locations?"
"Actually, I'm just sending you on a trip. You can take a walk around this route and then come back, or if there are other sights you want to see, you can go there too."
Peter, perplexed by Shiller's push out of the lab, said, "hey, wait, there's a battle coming up tonight, why am I touring during the day?"
"Stop asking. It's related to a plan Nick and I have. We'll tell you when you get back."
Even though Peter was full of doubts, he had no other things to do. The battle at Brooklyn Bridge had almost completely ceased by the afternoon. Both sides were resting and the injured had been sent away early in the morning. When the afternoon sun was at its peak, hardly any vampire could be seen. There were no enemies to deal with.
In the lab, Ethan and Doctor Connors were putting the final touches on the experiment. They had sufficient help and didn't need Peter's assistance.
With nothing else to do, Peter decided he might as well take a walk and potentially stop vampires from harming humans.
So, he left, of course, first going to the Brooklyn Bridge to check out the situation.
The bridge looked like ruins, and Peter saw Chief George helping to lift two injured officers onto a stretcher. He swung over with a thread of spider silk and gave Chief George a hand.
George glanced back at him, unsurprised. Peter had participated almost the entire first half of the previous battle, helping a lot and saving many lives. He was familiar with the red and blue costume, up and down he glanced at Spider Man and then said, "It's you, Spider Man, why are you here now?"
Peter saw the injured officer's chest stained a deep red by fresh blood. Even after so long, the pungent smell of blood still made him feel a bit sick.
"I can tell you're young, you're so young and taking such risks, don't your parents care?"
"I...." Spider Man shrugs and said: "I didn't let my aunt and uncle know, just told them I'm going over to a friend's house."
"If I were your aunt and uncle, I'd break your legs," Chief George turned around, limping a bit, which Peter noticed, then asked, "Chief, are you hurt?"
"Just a twisted foot, if I go home now, my wife and daughter will scream and yell," Chief George looked up, as if peering through the mask directly into Spider Man's eyes, he continued, "You're still so young, it's not yet time for the world to rely on you for salvation. Instead of doing this, you'd be better off spending more time with your aunt and uncle."
"I..." Peter turned his head away, saying, "If my aunt knew I was doing something this dangerous, she'd definitely break down."
"But you want to do this anyway, right?"
"Same as me, even though I know my daughter is probably crying worried about me right now, I still have to do this," George looked back as the two officers were loaded onto the ambulance, he said, "They're no different, they have their families and friends who worry about them, but they still showed up here anyway."
Peter also looked back at the two officers, one of whom cried out when he was lifted onto the ambulance because his wound was touched. Peter said, "That's exactly why I've come here, otherwise there will be even more people grieving."
"We're all fighting for our families, we'd rather get hurt and bleed than have them injured," George said, looking up. After saying these words, his gaze drifted to the bats hiding in the shadows under the ruins of the bridge. "These monsters will never understand the strength humans can show when fighting to protect what they believe in."
With that said, George left as he had to prepare for the night's defense. Peter took a deep breath and thought to himself, "I absolutely can't let these monsters continue their rampage, they can't harm my family or friends."
"Your emotions are always like a ball of white cotton, it's quite fascinating, I can hardly find any impurities," the Venom said within him, at this moment, it could clearly sense Peter's changing emotions.
"You are the complete opposite of someone I'd met before, you're like two sides of black and white."
"I couldn't find any positive emotions in him, but you, oppositely, barely have any negative emotions. Even when you do, they're mostly excessive sympathy, sadness, and hesitation. These can hardly be considered negative emotions."
"No positive emotions? That's impossible, how can there be such a person in this world?" Peter questioned.
"Would you like to feel it?"
As soon as Venom finished speaking, Peter suddenly felt his consciousness blur, then as if a black hole had appeared in his brain, a huge gravitational force dragged him towards an endless abyss. Immense fear swallowed him and within seconds he saw a sweeping tide of darkness.
When he regained consciousness, Peter found himself drenched in cold sweat. He asked Venom, "What was that?"
"A small gift left to me by my previous host, no... maybe I should say compensation for mental damage."
"Who exactly was your previous host? How could he have such terrifying emotions?"
"Him? He was a bat."
"A bat? You mean, he was a vampire? You have parasitized a vampire?"
"No, the vampires you speak of might be able to transform into bats, but they are never real bats."
"Why don't I understand what you're saying? Isn't the giant bat they transform into a bat? What other kinds of bats are there?"
"You wouldn't want to know the answer."
Then, Venom fell silent, staying quiet even in response to Peter's incessant questioning.
Alright, Peter thought, they are all fond of speaking in riddles, both Shiller and this symbiont.
His conversation with Chief George had somewhat dampened Peter's spirits, he lost interest in continuing to wander aimlessly. It would be better to return to the Stark Building. Even if there was no fight to be fought at the moment, it would be good to contribute to the research efforts.
But just as he was preparing to return, his spider-sense tingled, a talon attacked his back. Peter swiftly dodged, and then turned to see a vampire with red eyes standing in the shadow of the building.
Peter was surprised, it was now the time when the afternoon sun was strongest, and the majority of the bats he had seen on his way here were hiding in the shadows of the rubble from the collapsed Brooklyn Bridge.
However, Peter quickly shot a thread of spider silk onto a wall and swung over. The vampire seemed to have lost its reasoning, not dodging at all, but instead charging at Peter even faster.
And of course, the result was clear as day. Peter knocked it down with a punch, then used his Freeze Gun to encase it in ice. He was just planning to inspect the vampire to see if its mind was damaged when he lifted his head to find more than a dozen vampires standing in the shadow of the alley across the street, their eyes glowing red as they stared at him.
Peter was involuntarily chilled somewhat, he thought, what's wrong with these bats? Have they gone mad? Why would they target him?
Before he could figure out why, dozens of talon magics surrounded him. Peter rolled away to dodge and had just stood back up when he saw the several vampires launch suicidal attacks at him, completely ignorant to the sunlight above, transforming into bats and diving towards him.
Spider-Man cursed under his breath and swung onto the rooftop with his spider silk, preparing to temporarily retreat.
He had a Freeze Gun and powerful strength, so he was not incapable of defeating this group of bats, but the behavior of these vampires was simply too strange. Most vampires could hardly move in the daytime, yet these vampires, like puppets on a string, seemed to be controlled by something, launching suicidal attacks on him one after another.
The result, contrary to Peter's expectations, was that it wasn't just those dozen vampires giving chase. There were many more advanced vampires, and many among them appeared to be clear-headed and understood to chase along the shadow of the building to avoid exposing themselves to the sunlight.
As he kept running, Peter couldn't help but wonder, why were these vampires targeting him? Did he have something unique about him?
To be noted, Captain America was also nearby, assisting the police in setting up defense installations. He was in his civilian clothes without the Captain America uniform, and the recognizable pattern on his shield seemed to be covered with paint, so nobody noticed that he was the famous Captain America.
"Don't you think your outfit is a bit too conspicuous?" Venom spoke in Peter's mind.
Peter looked down at himself. His current Spider-Man suit was tailored by Stark, incorporating some of his and Dr. Connors' technology. The whole outfit was a combination of red and blue colors. Due to the adoption of the latest textile materials, it even shimmered slightly under the sunlight.
"Alright." Spider-Man said in his mind: "It does seem a bit high-profile."
He looked down at the people below. The residents here had nearly all evacuated, and the police were all dressed in blue uniforms, the armed police and the army personnel were all in dark clothes. He was the only one in a red and blue tight outfit bouncing around on the battlefield.
"Do you want to change your clothes?" Venom asked.
"Change clothes? I'd have to return to Mr. Stark's lab to ask him if he could change the color of this suit or something..."
"There's no need."
As soon as Venom finished speaking, Peter saw a thin layer of black substance covering his suit. The substance quickly permeated into the fibers of his suit, transforming the entire Spider-Man suit into black.
"Wait, how did you..." Peter exclaimed in surprise, "Mr. Stark told me that this new type of textile material has to be tailored using special methods, how can you just change its structure at will?"
"There's nothing special about that method, it's just dismantling the fibers, filling them with organic matter, and then arranging them into a completely new chain-like structure..."
"How do you know everything?" Peter asked with great perplexity, "Especially in the field of mecha and suits, you're making me feel as if I'm talking to Mr. Stark..."
