Trained for High Speed Chase

The reason Bob likes to stay working in the police records department is not just about staying low key and hiding himself. He believes that by using records, they could have solved crimes a lot faster.

For example, before Bob comes to the records department, there was one man who was shot behind the courthouse. The killer used a 9 mm Luger bullets. A few hours later, there was another man committed suicide by shooting himself with 9 mm Luger bullets. Turns out, that man who killed himself with a 9 mm gun was the one who murdered the man behind the courthouse. But no one looked at the records. So no one realized anything. And Bob hasn't started working at the records department yet.

If all law enforcement can file the key information correctly into the electronic system, and if all the detectives could use their records properly, they could have searched the keyword "9 mm bullets" and at least take a look. They would have found a connection. None of the detectives did that, they spent a month trying to find the killer, not knowing the killer was already dead.

After Bob took on the job in records office, he had always double referencing and checking. Not to mention, he has superb memory.

But now Bob has to be out on the streets and investigate.

And he wants to get Jack involved and learn. If Bob has to keep on living, he might as well pass down some knowledge and skills.

Police cruiser siren is loud and echoing in the city as they drive over to Hell's Kitchen.

Jack thought he drove fast but Bob drives very, very fast. And weirdly, Bob doesn't hit the brakes a lot. Bob seems to know every corner and the right angle to turn without braking too hard.

"Whoa Bob!" Jack calls out as Bob runs a red light.

Bob nonchalantly says, "You know, civilians are supposed to stop for us when our vehicle has sirens on."

Bob continues to snake through the road. And he suddenly stops short. Fortunately, Jack is wearing a seatbelt, or his face would have been thrown to the windshield.

"What the hell, man?" Jack complains.

Bob lowers the car window on Jack's side and shouts at the street sidewalk: "Are you out of your mind? Are you bicycling over to Hell's Kitchen?"

Jack looks over at the sidewalk.

It is Rosanne on a bicycle.

"Geez. What the hell are you doing, Rosanne. Have you not heard of driving a car or at least taking the subway?" Jack asks.

Rosanne stops and stares at them.

"Riding a bicycle is faster to get around in the city during morning rush hours than driving or taking the subway. I've already calculated and tested out the time in the past. This is the best way to go to places without disturbing any common citizens in the city."

"Oh my gosh, are you saying we are disturbing people with our driving?" Jack says.

Bob shakes his head, "Get in! Not everything is about surveys and analysis and public opinion."

"What? No! I'm not getting in the car. I have my bike!"

Bob suddenly gets off the car, opens the door to the back of the car, and nods at the backseat. "Lock your bicycle here by a lamppost. And get in the car."

"I am going to be there just fine, I can----"

"If you are going to shadow me then you shadow me properly. You ride in the car with us." Bob cuts her off, "If your bicycle is stolen or damaged, then I'll be responsible for it. OK?"

Rosanne then uses the chain lock that's already attached to the bike and chains it to a lamppost. She shows a disgusted face as she smells something unpleasant near the lamppost.

When she sits into the backseat, she makes another face as if she feels repelled and uncomfortable. Because the backseat is usually for criminals to sit in. Or people who might have blood all over them. Or drunkards who just puked in this car. Bob looks into the rearview mirror and notices her facial expression.

"This vehicle has been cleaned from top to bottom, including the backseat, so don't worry, OK? " Bob speaks a bit more tenderly.

"It's fine. You don't have to talk to me like I'm a child. Let's just get to the scene. I already met the witness this morning. His name is Ramon."

Bob nods and starts to drive on the streets with the sirens on again.

As Bob speeds up, Rosanne gasps and lets out small screams from the backseat.

"This is not car racing video game Bob!" Rosanne is very light-weighted and her body is tossed to one side as they make a turn.

Most of the cars stop and let their police car pass by first, but an off-red Volvo sedan doesn't stop and even starts to pick up the pace, driving ahead of them.

Bob frowns, "This car doesn't look right."

Jack agrees, "Yeah, it's like it's trying to escape from us. Whoever driving this must have thought we were after him, so he is speeding away."

Bob then starts to speed up even more and tail after that car. He is driving so dangerously close. If that Volvo hits the brakes just a little bit, Bob would have rear-ended it instantly.

"Bob!" Rosanne yells, "oh my gosh! Please!"

But Bob has a super natural relax and can detect things faster than normal people, so he is sure he will not bump into the car.

But Bob just says, " don't worry, young lady, I'm trained for high speed chase. And in any case, that car will run out of fuel before we do."

To be honest, Bob doesn't really think this car is escaping from them. Anyone with a guilty conscience would have tried to hide and not draw attention. He thinks the car is trying to lead them to somewhere else. The driver of this car doesn't want them to be on the crime scene to investigate.

Bob still wants to chase this car because he is curious why this driver doesn't want him to investigate.

It might sound heartless,. but, the two victims are already dead, they can't be more dead by waiting for them just a few more minutes. And the witness is a homeless person who doesn't seem to have anywhere that needs him right now. The witness can also wait.

Bob has lived in this world for so long that he doesn't worry about a lot of things. At least not too much. He is usually in a bit of "whatever, I am too old to fret over this shit anymore" mindset.

The only thing he only worries about is being discovered-- His secret identity.

As he speeds tightly against that off-red Volvo, Rosanne screams again:

"Don't chase that car! Please!"

"I have to, it's very suspicious." Bob replies.

"Relax, Rosanne. Once you shadow a policeman long enough, you'll get used to it," Jack laughs. He enjoys the high speed chase. This is better than playing car racing video game.

Rosanne yells with her eyes closed, clearly too afraid to see how Bob is driving too fast and too close to the other car:

"Listen, Bob, even if you won't get hurt, I don't want you to be in a car accident! How are you going to explain it!?"

Bob's heart skips a beat. What did she just say? She knows Bob won't get hurt? Or it's just a general description? Like she meant it as a figure of speech, but not literally?
