The announcer left the stage, and we returned to our positions. As the favorites to win, we had the most students competing, followed closely by Cobra Kai and Topanga Karate, each with two fighters. The first match was between Miguel and Tyler.
Miguel vs. Tyler
They faced each other, taking their stances. To reach the round of eight, both had to be skilled fighters. I had done some research on my competition the day before and learned a lot. Tyler, an older student from Topanga Karate, had a strength and experience advantage over Miguel. However, Miguel was known for his speed and talent in karate.
I looked at Robby and said, "This is going to be a good fight. Take notes because one of them might be your next opponent."
"Will do," he nodded, and we continued watching.
The referee took his place. "Look at me, bow. Look at each other, bow. Ready? Fight!"
Miguel initiated with a punch aimed at Tyler's head, trying for a quick point. Tyler barely caught his punch and retaliated with a kick to Miguel's head. Miguel ducked, dodging the attack, but Tyler pressed forward, sending him to the ground. As Miguel fell on his back, Tyler lunged for a point, but at the last moment, Miguel kicked up, hitting Tyler in the face and sending him back.
"Point!" the referee announced, as Tyler grabbed his jaw and walked back to his spot.
The referee restarted the match, and Tyler attacked first with a head punch. Miguel deflected it and aimed for a rib punch. Tyler caught his punch, pulled him over his shoulder, and slammed him to the ground before landing a punch to Miguel's head.
"Point!" the referee declared. They returned to their positions, ready to continue.
The match resumed, and both fighters charged in for their next attack. Tyler caught Miguel's arm, pulling him into a punch. Miguel blocked, but Tyler got down low, sweeping Miguel's legs and throwing him to the ground. Tyler went in for a head punch, but Miguel was too slow to block it, and Tyler scored his second point.
"Match point, fight!" the referee called.
Miguel, desperate, executed a head punch while Tyler aimed for a head kick. In a surprising move, Miguel caught Tyler's leg. Robby exclaimed, "He isn't going to do that!"
I replied, "He is."
Tyler tried to escape, but it was too late. Miguel dropped down and struck Tyler's knee, bending it awkwardly. Tyler screamed in pain and collapsed, clutching his knee. Medics and the referee rushed in.
"Foul! One point deduction," the referee announced, speaking with the medics. After a tense moment, he returned. "Tyler isn't able to continue fighting. Diaz advances to the round of four."
The crowd erupted in boos as Miguel returned to his team, grinning widely. I turned to Robby and warned, "Be cautious when you fight him; he plays dirty."
Robby nodded and prepared for his match against Tonny. Despite Tonny being a strong fighter, Robby had reached a higher level with my guidance and tactics. He managed to beat Tonny 3-0 with minimal damage. When he returned, we fist-bumped before I headed in to fight Xander.
Jack vs. Xander
I took my position on one side of the mat, while Xander stood on the opposite side. Xander was memorable from the show, not just for his skills but also for his eccentric mother, who began booing and threatening me from the sidelines.
"Sorry about her," Xander sighed, clearly embarrassed.
"No problem," I replied, unfazed. I wasn't interested in dragging this fight out, so I aimed to end it quickly.
The referee started the match, and I rushed forward like a flash, getting past his defense and kneeing him in the stomach, sending him back a few meters. He grunted in pain, and I secured the first point.
We returned to our positions, and this time Xander attacked first. He feinted a head punch that transitioned into a stomach kick. Drawing on my extensive fighting experience, I countered with a straight kick to his chest. He crossed his arms in an "X" shape to block, but my kick had enough force behind it to send him stumbling back.
I charged forward and landed a punch to his head, earning my second point.
"Match point, fight!" the referee declared. I took the initiative again, rushing in and targeting pressure points in his arms, temporarily disabling them. I followed up with a punch to his stomach, causing him to fold in half. Spinning around, I delivered a roundhouse kick to his head, knocking him down.
Xander's mom erupted, yelling, "He's cheating! My Xander could never lose!" Thankfully, Amanda managed to calm her down, and the referee awarded me my final point.
I returned to the Miyagi-Do corner, joining my teammates as we waited for Sam's match to begin.
Sam vs. Hawk
As they prepared, Hawk, underestimating Sam, grinned like he had already won. The match began, and Hawk took the initiative with a head punch. Sam, however, deflected his punch and countered with an elbow to his stomach, earning the first point.
The referee announced, "Point!" and they resumed their match. Hawk's frustration grew due to his loss to a girl, and he charged in with a reckless, brawler-like style, disregarding his own safety.
Sam, more skilled, caught Hawk's non-dominant hand, attempting a new move. She punched a couple of pressure points, paralyzing his arm, and lightly punched his stomach. However, like me, she hadn't mastered pressure points yet. Hawk took advantage of her kindness, spinning around and elbowing her in the chest.
Sam narrowly avoided the full force, but the blow connected with her shoulder, causing her to yell in pain. They broke apart, and the conflicted referee declared, "No point. Continue."
Gritting her teeth, Sam's anger flared, and she was determined to retaliate against Hawk for the pain he had caused her. Hawk noticed her expression and instinctively took a step back, sensing her fury.
I rushed to Daniel, wanting him to stop the fight, but I was too late. Sam charged forward, and when she closed the distance, she kicked Hawk in the head, sending him rolling to the side. However, due to her emotional state, the hit lacked the intended power, causing only superficial damage.
Sam rushed in for another attack, but the referee intervened. "Illegal hit! No point!" he shouted. A furious Sam turned around, fists clenched, as the crowd began booing her.
In the chaos, no one noticed Hawk, fueled by anger, rushing toward Sam from behind. We tried to warn her, but it was too late. Hawk elbowed her in the already injured shoulder with all his momentum.
Sam fell to the ground, screaming in pain. Her arm was visibly dislocated, and the medics and officials rushed in to separate the two fighters.
Aftermath
After a few tense minutes of discussion with the medics, the announcer stepped forward. "Samantha Larusso is unable to continue fighting. We would disqualify Eli Moskowitz, but we've decided that his actions were provoked by Larusso's illegal hit, so he will continue to the next round with a warning."
"That isn't fair!" I exclaimed, frustration boiling over.
Daniel, looking disappointed, replied, "This situation was caused by one of our students, so we don't have the right to complain. The only thing you can do is beat him in the semi-finals."
I gritted my teeth, feeling the weight of the injustice. Robby patted my back, trying to comfort me. "Don't worry; he has karma coming for him."
I smirked, saying, "So my new name is Karma?"
We both chuckled, but the tension in the air remained as we prepared for the next round.
